The fire service’s Incident Command Unit, which has served the Isle of Wight for the past 28 years, is being replaced. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is continuing its investment in the Isle of Wight fleet by replacing the ageing 1996 Mercedes 814D/Saxon vehicle. For almost 30 years, the Incident Command Unit (ICU) – based out of Newport Fire Station – has acted as a contact, reporting and command point at the Island’s largest incidents. It’s first shout is thought to have been a wildfire on St Boniface Down, Ventnor at 17:18 on 9th April 1997. But the time has come to replace it with a brand new, modern vehicle. It was in 2014 that the ICU received a £1million upgrade with new satellite technology, thermal imaging, CCTV and air conditioning. It’s been confirmed that all of the upgraded equipment on board is being stripped out and placed into the new vehicle, reported to be a brand new MAN, which has helped to keep costs down. The new command unit represents a £150,000 investment and will provide crews with state-of-the-art technology, large workstations and an external facing screen to allow crew briefing. It is expected to go ‘on the run’ in the Summer.

what MAN say about their trucks….Once a lion, always a lion: The new MAN is recognisable at the first glance as a MAN

Ha Ha Ha – that language totally flies in the face of all the woke LGBTQ pandering dross we have been putting up with from the fire service for the last few years.
Wow, that is even a stretch for you. That takes some skill to turn a story about a new vehicle into a homophobic rant. Well done, I hope you feel good about attacking others. For the recorded, there is no “woke LGBTQ pandering dross”. It’s all the figment of the right-wing MAGA imagination. Wake up mate and learn to think for yourself.
wrong fred, so wrong – a mere two second search online will provide you with multiple examples of the fire services inane, woke drivel
Well done Fred!
You’ve been putting up with? In the fire service? I suggest you have a chat with your CO to voice your concerns. There really is no need for YOU to have to put up with anything. Alternatives are always available in the brigade….
Does it hurt when you think?
did your mum type the words for you mia – jeez – do a bit of research will you.
Just because you read something on the internet, doesn’t mean it’s valid research. People write any old crap on tinternet but that doesn’t make it valid or true.
correct Qwerty, karen is full of it.
How would he know?
I hope it will go to a museum and be preserved. Preferably on the island and indoors. Maybe even the Bus Museum at Ryde, Aviation Museum, Steam Museum or even the Tank Museum. Somewhere so we do not lose it.
Maybe it could end up on a farm on the Island, offering glamping experiences.
This is why our council tax is going up.
Because vehicles need replacing after 30 years? Well, yes. Duh.
It’s only done 350 miles from new!
Why do we need one , plenty of space in the engine cabs ,do away with it and the Driver that will save the poor rate payers a lot of money.
why 30 years karen – what is so essential about an arbitrary date? – with adequate maintenance a mechanical device can operate in perpetuity.
