An 18-year-old man will appear before Isle of Wight Magistrates after being charged with drink-driving on an E-scooter.
Jasper Firth, of Cambridge Grove, Hammersmith, will appear before the court on the 10th September following his arrest on Shanklin Esplanade on Saturday (21st August).
An Isle of Wight Police spokesperson said:
“A male was arrested and charged for drink driving on a Beryl e-scooter, he will attend court at a later date. I believe this is the 4th person now.
“I will be in contact with Beryl and the council to discuss what they can do to reduce the risk of harm to others and to prevent this from happening.”

Some people sadly live in caves and unless you stood in front of them and said DON’T JUMP OFF A CLIFF they`d be none the wiser and would probably jump off a cliff. That said i think that some of the imagery and wording on the Beryl site should change, ie everyone pictured in a cycle helmet on a scooter and maybe DRINK AND RIDE THIS AND GET BANNED FROM DRIVING.
these scooters just entice youngsters, we were fine without them, its criminalising kids..bin the trial, everywhere these things are there is trouble..
I saw two scooters going the wrong way down Sandown High Street the other day, one of them had two people on it. Another scooter left in the hedge near Dinosaur Museum and not in its allotted bay also 2 privately owned scooters in Sandown. I’m not against electric scooters but people are just taking the P**s. It’s impossible to read the small number plate to report the incidents and who do you report it to anyway?
Sadly despite what the police might want, and Beryl might want, nothing on Gods earth is going to stop a drunk idiot getting on a scooter (or in a car. or on a motorbike, or on a bicycle etc) if that is what they want to do. Its entirely in the hands of the individual, and that means common sense, and trust -both in very short supply in this modern society.
I find it amazing that some of these scooters can do up to 30 mph. Yet us disabled people are only allowed to do 8 mph. No matter if we have had a fill driving licance for years.
Yes, but they are not disabled,if they have a crash they can just walk off and you can’t,sad but true.
The legal scooters (The Beryl ones) are limited to 12.5 mph.
I believe that you need a Driving Licence in order to access one of these vehicles.
Having a licence implies a satisfactory understanding of road use and a degree of competence. Surely, in these circumstances, the owner of said licence (even if that is not the rider) should have the licence immediately taken away from them. And if they knowingly allow an unlicenced person the use of that licence, a very heavy penalty should also follow automatically.
As usual, we may have to wait until some innocent pedestrian is crippled for life (or worse) before anything is done to protect us.
