Firefighters are working to contain and extinguish a field fire that has broken out on the outskirts of Rookley.
An appliance from the mainland, standing by on the Isle of Wight due to the ongoing blaze at Headon Warren, is on scene at Pidford Manor between Rookley and Blackwater this afternoon (Thursday).
It is here that a large field has caught fire, believed to be as a result of hay cutting taking place.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is already stretched in terms of resources due to the Headon Warren wildfire, but fire crews are working to bring the incident at Pidford Manor to a swift conclusion.
UPDATE @ 15:21 – The fire has been successfully extinguished, but a large area of field has been left charred by the blaze.
The incident has been brought to a close.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.
