The cost of the Isle of Wight Council’s Green Garden Waste collection service will rise again on Friday, marking a £30 increase in less than 2 years. The decision was made in the days before Christmas to increase the price of the discretionary service to £102 a year, from £96. The fee will rise 6.25% to cover inflationary costs related to replacement bins, staff pay and overtime, uniforms and fuel. When the scheme was first launched in 2017 the service cost £60 and rose to £72 in 2022, with a further price hike last year to £96. The monthly price of the subscription will rise from £8 to £8.50. The Isle of Wight Council says the service is extremely popular, with currently around 10,350 subscribers having their garden waste collected from their houses fortnightly. This means the local authority generates around £1million from the service, with this latest increase resulting in additional income of £62,000. The higher price will come into force on Friday 5th January, if no Isle of Wight councillor objects to the increase by Thursday. The council needs to bring the changes in now to ensure subscriptions and renewals are open to residents with the price change, early in the year.

How ridiculous, as if Council Tax is not enough.
So basically the council will add extra costs for collections. Isn’t that what the original idea of council tax was ????? What charge will they bring in next I wonder, greedy and corrupt, time for them and county hall to go.
This is foolhardy. People use the collection because it is cost effective. Price it out of being that and people will stop bothering. We already have enough flytipping as it is. The charge for this collection is already on top of the Council Tax.
Seeing as i already pay for my bins to be collected via council tax, thats where my garden waste will go,its gone up nearlly 100% since it was launched
robbing ba****ds!
iow council,you suck!
IWC rip off council .. for 1 bin collection every fortnight .. .. which pays for itself already !! Another con job .. now increase the Floating Farce fares !! But you won’t .. just keep wasting more money That’s what you do best ..
£102 looks like a side of the road job
Great idea.
In East Devon they only charge £50 per year for a fortnightly service.
£102 seems a bit excessive just like the car parking tax on the island £6.20 for 3 hours!
The island is run by crooked greedy B’stards
Greedy b.lets hope they get lots of cancelled subscriptions eh
so they need more money for there pension pot or it it to waste as much money as they did last year
Use biffa much cheaper
Use Biffa, its much cheaper.
Well that’s my bin going back
share with a neighbour
What if your neighbour is a W’anchor

When will the council realise that putting the price of things up will just make people cancel their service meaning less money for the council
Very poor value. Considering a possible maximum of 26 collections during one year. Probably not used during the extreme winter months. Potentially costing up to nearly £8- £10 each collection. Other options available.
Back to the bonfires then.
Well I won’t be renewing my collection fee then. Wait to see all of the returned green waste bins at the tips come April.
Well the IOW had to be top of the list at something.
Just didn’t realise that having the most expensive garden waste scheme in the country would be the result!
Would make sense for local allotments to have communal composting areas. Then at least the council wouldn’t win both ways by charging for collection and keeping all of the compost produced.
Perhaps the council wants us to tip our garden waste in the roadside hedges. After all they can sell it as compost and make some money that way.
All Households should give up the Garden Waste bin, just another
Council stealth tax.
Cut the grass and leave as mulch, much cheaper.
Do what most Dog Walkers do, take the bag out at night and put in or near
a poo bin.
Woof Woof, job done.
what a con ill just take it myself stuff em..
Who is running this council Dick Turpin?
The Great Train Robbers were not as bad.
