Isle of Wight families who claim Child Benefit will automatically receive increased payments from Saturday (6th April). Families with 1 child will now receive up to £1,331 a year – an annual increase of £83.20, and up to £881 a year per additional child – an annual increase of £54.60. There is no limit to how many children families can claim for. Parents will receive £102.40 every 4 weeks (£25.60 per week) for the first or only child and £67.80 every 4 weeks (£16.95 per week) for each additional child. Also from 6th April 2024, families where the highest earner has a salary of up to £60,000 a year will now not be subject to the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC). Previously, a person who had an annual income of £50,000 or more would be liable to pay the charge if they or their partner were receiving Child Benefit. For those earning between £60,000 and £80,000, the amount of Child Benefit they are entitled to receive reduces as income increases within this range. Families with ongoing claims do not need to contact HMRC, as the increased benefit payment will continue to be paid directly into their bank accounts. Anyone who needs to update their personal details, such as a change of bank account or address, can do so using the HMRC app or online at GOV.UK. Parents with a newborn baby are encouraged to make a claim online as soon as possible and could receive their first payment in as little as 3 days. Child Benefit claims can be backdated by a maximum of 3 months. Angela MacDonald, HMRC’s Deputy Chief Executive and Second Permanent Secretary, said:
“The increase in Child Benefit rates for existing claimants is automatic and families do not need to contact us. New claimants should apply online or using HMRC’s app. Search ‘child benefit’ on GOV.UK for more information.”

What it means for you. Well it means the tax payers are getting screwed even more
If the Tories had not sold off all the council housing we would not need to be paying out so much more money to help families (most who work) to pay their rent. Rent is often three times what a mortgage would be. If you’re a tory moaning about this, well done, you did this, you played yourself.
If ONLY this was the ONLY rise those who love to claim poverty had had this year.
Those who don’t know, when you have a child or children, the ‘child allowance’ is ONLY a small part of the package of benefits.
Those who bother to work just 16 short hours a week, then claim hundreds a week in child tax credits and working tax credits, to make their ‘pay’ up to hundreds a week.
BUT that is not all. They then, because they are on ‘means tested benefits’ then get FREE or heavily subsidised rent and council tax, so are often better off than most people working full time.
They then can claim extra food and energy help of thousands per year, add free prescriptions, school meals, uniforms, dental care for ALL family. Spongers.
Before all the comments kick off, remember everyone receives this benefit (salary dependant obviously).
not everyone has children, those of us without subsidies those with.
Like we’ve all subsidised your state education and reliance on NHS regardless of whether we’ve used either? Oh yes, I see your point.
Actually no.
This is a means tested benefit. To sound like Jeremy *unt. With the current inflation, £60,000 actually affects a lot of families.
The biggest impact of it, is forcing those people to complete an annual Self assessment tax return, if they still claim despite their earning. Remember sometime seperated families still have to claim, and often people’s basic salary is under the threshold, but overime, bonuses and annual profit awards take them over when they are not expecting it.
Then any interest earned, any income from letting the spare room etc – legally need to be declared etc – Which also gets a lot of families.
You also have to apply to recieve the benefit, you don’t just get given it.
Wow! You would have thought a rate rise like this would apply nationally, not just on the Isle of Wight.
Yeah but triggering clickbaiting pays!!
Shouldn’t be paying people to have kids at all. If you can’t afford them, don’t have them. Why should the rest of us pay for your offspring.
Exactly. We don’t need to sponsor people to have more inbred useless offspring when we can import better quality people with brains who want to work and pay taxes.
Good for the single mums business. No chance on island home finder as places get taken by single mums and by the time the queue goes down the single mums offspring will get on the queue ahead of you.
Single mothers in need are not weighted higher than any other family in need. And no mother was single at conception, was she? Surely you’re not suggesting men have NOT taken responsibility for the children she’s saddled with? Or maybe you subscribe to the ‘SHE got HERSELF pregnant’? I’d love to know how that one works.
Nice little earner if you own a working womb
People who have kids are responsible too pay for them .not hard the pressed tax payers
This cash cow scam will keep em coming no doubt!!
Shame it’s never actually risen in line with either inflation or the actual cost of living. Of course if everyone (and I mean everyone) had a guaranteed basic income then it becomes a hand up, not a hand out which so many privileged people think it is. Would cost far less too.
“guaranteed basic income” – ha ha, that is a good one. Never going to happen. Millions of medicated stress-heads would just stop working and they do most of the work in this country. “If you want something done, ask a busy person”.
After two children no family allowance should be paid. Why should the tax payer have to pay for
parents who have never used contraception.
Why should I have to pay [more] for other people’s kids? I pay for private healthcare; private dentistry; private schooling for my children and get taxed to the hills. I’m already helping the state / council by releasing pressure, but yet they’re taking more from me for nothing! Takes the piss. Maybe I’m doing the wrong thing and I should be rinsing the system too… Child benefit shouldn’t be a thing – you decided to reproduce, so you deal with them!
Why do we have Child Benefit, I wonder how many countries have it?
