Works to repair a failed sewer pipe on West Lane in Brading are to take place on Thursday – providing it doesn’t rain. As first reported by Island Echo, contractors arrived at West Lane – the road connecting Brading to Ashey – as a result of a failed pipe on Friday 16th February. Since then, Southern Water engineers have been working around the clock to resolve the situation, with pumping equipment established on site. Despite their efforts, poor weather has meant that a fix hasn’t yet taken place with engineers waiting for a few consecutive days of dry weather – something that has been pretty hard to come by so far in 2024. As a result of the works, numerous containers have been put in place at Appley Car Park in Ryde where overflow/excess sewage is being stored before then being transported elsewhere. Practically all of the car park has been fenced off, with just the top section remaining open to the public. A spokesperson from Southern Water, has said:
“We’re still using the car park currently as the repairs were delayed due to the bad weather over the last two weeks or so. (Part of the car park can still be used by the public) “We’re now aiming to complete the repair on Thursday this week.”

Here come the boy racer and old man comments, too many comments on this site are shamefully sexist.
Was a boy racers once 43 years ago in my dads 1600gls capri only crashed it once and me dad made me buy it of him after it was repaired cost me a load of money now I am over 65 and only take blood pressure drugs from a old geezer lol
What’s the betting morons speeding in torrential
conditions.
SLOW DOWN
More drugged up island idiots will be along soon….
If it’s the same car i saw driving at ridiculously dangerous speeds through Lake & Shanklin on 2 seperate occassions then i’m not surprised to see they’ve come a cropper, just shame another car was involved.
The reason I don’t drive very much over here now, it’s scary out there,
Wonder if there are block gully’s causing the floods if so island roads should be held responsible
I’m not suggesting a cause here, I don’t know the facts, but those conditions would screen the ‘trenches’ at the edges of the tarmac there, left by Island Roads.
3 lads fled, purely guessing but maybe stolen by youngsters without the correct documentation and speeding. If not they are something and need to get it out of their system ore police test.
If they fled somethings not right they are not badly hurt so the ambulance will be for the other.
The actual crash might not have been the lads fault
But they are in wrong somehow.
I do hope they have their rain coats with them, it’s foul weather out there tonight.
Guess what – it’s raining.
Guess this one goes back on the ever growing pile of major unresolved issues we’re collecting here on the Isle of “Wait”.
What has rain got to do with repairing a sewer pipe? For goodness sake, just put a marquee type thing over the hole in the field and get on with it.
Everything, literally everything gets delayed and delayed these days.
Do you not understand that rainwater ends up in that pipe, and it can’t be repaired when it’s full?
Perhaps Brading residents could detest from defecation for just a couple of hours to lessen the water level in the pipe if a time was given?
A large inflatable balloon could then be stuffed up the pipe blown up to prevent any seepage and then get on and fix it, then deflate the balloon, and sound a siren to alert people to then flush or do their no.2’s
