Brave Island has teamed up with a range of different local partners to offer 32 work experience placements to young people on the Isle of Wight, which will be taking place over the next 2 years.
These specially curated placements have been set up to give young people the opportunity to work with established heritage and conservation organisations in roles that wouldn’t normally be available.
Megan Stisted, Project Manager, says:
“Since Brave Island launched four years ago, we’ve consistently heard that young people want more work opportunities. Whether that’s looking to gain valuable experience for future careers, explore roles you hadn’t considered before, or find that crucial entry point into an industry you love, we’ve got an exciting update!”
These placements will fall under one of the below categories:
Heritage Work Experience Placements: These placements, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, are open to those aged 16-25. They are 1 day per week for 6 months, and the placement holder will be paid a stipend of £100/day from Brave Island. These placements will be hosted by a variety of heritage and conservation organisations and offer roles that focus on skills such as research, environmental conservation, marketing, and events.
The first lot of these placements are now open for applications on the Brave Island website, and include a Ranger placement and a Researcher placement with the National Trust, and an Exhibition Coordinator placement with Newport Minster.
Starter Work Experience Placements: These placements, funded by The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation will be 10 days long and offer a variety of roles. Starter Work placements are ideal for anyone just getting into the world of work, maybe a young person who’s just finished education and isn’t sure what they want to do next, or someone who’s just looking to gain some experience to get started in the job market.
Brave Island will cover expenses (like food and travel) at a rate of £50/day, so the placement holder won’t be out of pocket from taking part. Placement roles will range from Production and Box Office at Ventnor Fringe Festival, to Retail Assistants at a record shop and cafe, teaching skills like marketing, customer service, or events production.
Brave Island is an online platform set up by Ventnor Exchange to provide free creative opportunities for 14-25-year-olds living on the Isle of Wight. There are new opportunities every week from mentoring and training, to paid jobs and commissions.
Well done and great idea, but when Labour’s
Budget kicks in, unemployment will go through
the roof.
