Cowes Enterprise College students have been crowned winners of the High Sheriff’s Award for Debating after overcoming competition from 9 other Island schools.
The Cowes Sixth Form team of Lara, Finn and Callum impressed judges with their argument opposing a ban on social media for under-16s.
Rather than supporting restrictions, the trio argued that education and regulation would be more effective than an outright ban. Their presentation demonstrated strong research, confident delivery and an ability to respond to opposing viewpoints.
The students achieved full marks from the judges, who praised their debating skills throughout the competition.
The award was presented by the High Sheriff, while Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley attended the event and delivered a session on debating techniques for the competing teams.
Adrian Price, Senior Principal at Cowes Enterprise College, said:
“We are incredibly proud of Lara, Finn and Callum for this outstanding achievement. Their performance showcased the confidence, critical thinking and communication skills we encourage across our sixth form.
“They represented the college exceptionally well and should be very proud of their achievement.”
Cowes Sixth Form has an active Debate Club and Law Society, helping students develop public speaking, critical thinking and advocacy skills alongside their studies.
The college’s AspireLaw programme also supports aspiring lawyers, with a number of former students having gone on to successful careers in the legal profession.
