Figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal that there have been 3 new deaths on the Isle of Wight outside of St Mary’s Hospital due to COVID-19 — 1 at home, 1 in a care home and 1 in a hospice.
The latest figures, released today (Tuesday), show a further death was registered in a care home on the Island, up to 24th April, bringing the total up to 3.
2 people have now unfortunately died at home and the first death of a person in a hospice, where COVID-19 was registered as the cause, has also occurred.
Figures for those who die in a care home, hospice or at home are not included in the figures produced daily by NHS England, which tells the public how many have died in hospital due to coronavirus.
As of 4th May, 28 people had died at the Isle of Wight’s only hospital, St Mary’s, with a total registered 143 cases of the virus. However, the most recent figure of those who have recovered from the virus stands at 25.
Different data, from Public Health England, shows however that COVID-19 is present in almost a quarter of Island care homes, with 17 of 75 homes recording symptoms or confirmed cases.
The total Island death toll now sits at 34.

So sad please islanders abide by the law stay home and get this app will help nhs and save lives please
It’s not law that we have to stay home but government guidelines to help us slow the infection. Its just a shame that some of the population don’t give a rats butt and carry on visiting friends family and the what was normal life before the pandemic,
Yes, and nothing’s going to change the mindset of these people, that’s why it’s going to take a long time to deal with this Pandemic..
Clare, and don’t forget government bungling, this was a statement from M Hancock end of January 2020 “The chief medical officer has revised the risk to the UK population from very low to low, and has concluded that while there is an increased likelihood that cases may arise in this country, we are well prepared and well equipped to deal with them.
What ever political persecution you are, this pandemic came out of the blue with little worning to prepare.
do not think for one moment Labour would have prepared for this Chinese pandemic any better, because I do not recall Labour saying anything before the pandemic started.
Hi Clare, firstly I don’t feel persecuted by politicians? My original statement was not political but a statement of fact ( Hancock actually said that) And more importantly I know this island is rabidly Tory. As for me I think all politicians are liars
PS this pandemic coming out of the blue…..sorry NO !
Then why didn’t you let us know what was coming before it turned into a pandemic?..
The Island is mostly Torrey yes! It’s called democracy, just as London is rabidly Labour.
I think you need to realise, most of the world couldn’t for-see what was coming, so to single out one politician or party is wrong on this occasion.
Clare there is a lot of evidence showing this is no big surprise and that appropriate measures were not taken
Agree Dismus. Laboratory made, laboratory accident and then Watch out World?
Sorry this did not come out of the blue, it simply was dismissed by the senior medical people. We were not prepared in any shape or form and people have lost their lives as a result.
Why do we think that the Government are giving 60k to the families of NHS staff that have lost their lives as a result?
I agree with you Labour said and did nothing as well!
@James Rann - Digital News Reporter, if it’s not law then how are people being fined for not obeying it?
From the UK Constitutional Law Association…

It is the law James!!!! Stop spreading miss information.

This virus will continue to take lives for a very, very long time, no matter what we do, or don’t do.
This virus spread from one single person across the entire planet.
Someone, somewhere will always have it, and that someone will infect others who will in turn infect more.
Even IF, we eradicated this from the whole Island, unless no-one new arrives here, or infected letters, parcels etc arrive, then someone will accidently bring this across and the whole thing will begin again.
Until a vaccine is found, and then only if it hasn’t mutated into different forms, we are stuck with it.
Whilst keeping indoors will limit the daily amount dying, the same amount will die as they eventually have to come out of isolation, all just a means of giving the dying a bed in hospital in which to sadly breath their last.
Sadly those who think we can beat this, as in eliminating it pre a vaccine, are mistaken.
That won’t happen until an effective vaccine is, if ever, developed.
Imagine the Winter, when many have coughs, fever etc, at school, the children will bring it home, along with CV as we can’t keep on avoiding education, work, and life in the undetermined time span of a ‘cure’ being found.
Will have to just face it imo and hope we are not taken or left adversely affected by this vile virus.
I know such thoughts are unpopular as I have read this board with interest, but can you see any other way of life continuing otherwise?
So you don’t belong to the National Health unless you are in a National Health Hospital !!!!
