Stockpiling of provisions and the sight of empty shelves is a worry but businesses across the island are rising to the challenge by ensuring we can all access local food and drink.
Islanders are being encouraged to show support to these special local businesses who will hopefully not just survive but will also grow and develop to provide more for the island in the future.
Graham Biss, Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society Vice-Chairman, has said:
“All our Wight Marque accredited farm shops are not only open for business but most have extended their services by now offering door to door delivery across the island. Most of our members offer an online service and despite all restaurants, cafes and bars being closed many Wight Marque members are now offering a takeaway and delivery service for cooked meals for the first time.
“This is a fantastic response and one which we can all benefit from now, and in the months to come”.
Wight Marque is the Island’s food and drink provenance scheme run by the RIWAS.
Wight Marque member Paul Griffin, Briddlesford Farm said:
“It is challenging times for everyone but we are trying to meet demand. The Cows have to be milked every day and thankfully with our own processing plant we can maintain supply of milk and dairy products, alongside other locally produced food products”.
