Ryde Town Council has tried to allay residents’ fears after submitting an application to hold events at Ryde’s Eastern Gardens all year round.
In a licence application to the Isle of Wight Council, the town council is asking for permission to play films, live and recorded music as well as hold dance performances, Monday to Sunday, 09:00 to 23:00, at the open space near to Ryde Marina.
They also want to sell alcohol, every day from noon to 23:00, at the site on the Esplanade, which they have recently taken on under a 125-year lease.
If the licence were to be granted, Ryde Town Council (RTC) would like it to start on 1st August and say all staff would be trained; a telephone number would be displayed to deal with any issues from an event and door supervisors would be engaged.
Residents, however, say the licence would allow events to take place every day of the year from the morning until late at night, causing continued disturbances.
Taking to social media to address the uneasiness, RTC said a number of people were understandably worried about Eastern Gardens becoming a ’24/7 365 party venue’ but wanted to put everyone’s mind at ease it was not.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the Town Council said the premises licence would allow them to arrange and allow events they feel are of benefit to the Ryde community while being able to have a say in what happens at the gardens. It says without the licence, everyone can apply to the Isle of Wight Council for a temporary events notice, which takes time and money and is limited to 15 individual events, spanning no more than 22 days a year.
With larger events already happening, like Ticket to Ryde, IW Classic Car Show and IW Pride, the licence would also allow them to put on markets, children’s entertainment and daytime summer-themed events.
It says it believes there are enough late-night music events held at Eastern Gardens already and is not looking to increase them.
The Town Council has said:
“If you are hoping for a local, responsible, inclusive and properly-managed approach to Eastern Gardens that takes into account local needs and creates a positive image then you are in luck.”
The application (22/00901/LAPNEW) can be viewed on the Isle of Wight Council’s licensing portal. Comments can be submitted until 27th July in writing to the council’s licensing section, Jubilee Stores, The Quay, Newport, PO30 2EH.

Who would not want Derek Sandy all year around?
Seriously though there is a very good reason why outdoor music events at the same venue are are restricted to a maximum per year. But of course Ryde Town Council councillors don’t live next to these venues so they wouldn’t know the reason.
Anyhow it’s all about making money from selling booze and over-priced food, we know RTC!
Derek sandy any more than one night a week is more than enough thankyou ,,,,
agree about making money that’s the whole point .
we all work for that reason
selling booze and overpriced food it’s a personal choice if you want to buy it ,it’s not mandatory
I live right by Eastern gardens and it is already unbearable. I have recorded decibel levels of over 100. the safe limit is 70. Even at 70 I cannot make a phone call or work, nor can my daughter study for her A levels. Please come to the meeting today, Sunday 24th at The Simeon Arms at 4.00pm.
Why doesn’t Ryde Town Council inject all of its time, energy and skills into restoring an ideally permanent building for live events like Ryde Town Hall?

Hopefully they won’t get it
The racket from human broken karaoke machine Derek Sandy every weekend is bad enough. Wouldn’t be that bad if it was half decent stuff down there but RTC have a warped idea of what is fun. Seems to be anything that p!sses of the locals!
Ambiguous headline. Clever. Watch this space.
They say there will be a telephone number, I can hear it know “We are very busy please hold your call is important to us”
After one or two event the grass will be destroyed and it will become just brown earth. Great excuse to concrete it at a later date.
I feel sorry for the people whose property faces Eastern Gardens as I am sure their property values will fall.
This Council is either stupid or it thinks the people of Ryde are stupid.
Your last sentence =both

This year the racket from the “entertainment” has made many residents lives a misery as the musicians seem to think the higher the volume to more talent they have, the noise goes on from 10am to 10pm and if we are really lucky we are treated to the row from the Castle.
Let the councilors find a venue right next to their homes and see how they like it.
Lastly why should we tax payers have to fund these events.
Seems to me that the council are trying to out perform the Harbour Marina. Putting a beer tent beside it !! I also think that Ryde Council should use the money they always ay do not have, to as one other suggested, fix up Ryde Town Hall, have music events there, a Town Hall again in Ryde where TOURISTS can also visit, instead of a dump.
Keep the green to just 22 events a year, give the locals some relax time.. instead of constant BOOM, BOOM, BOOM ! Not everyone likes the same music, so give it a break !!
And what about noise restriction ?? How many decibels…. Also how about the noise from that little motorbike that back fires purposely
Re the backfiring motorbike, the rider and his cretin mates have been reported to the police by a number of residents yet thy do nothing, the noise and antisocial behaviour such as doing wheelies along the Esplanade starts in the early evening and goes on until after 10pm daily.
Yes and they live up Upton road.up there all night police need to sort them they ride round Ryde like idiots and get away with it
I applaud RTC for trying to create a community entertainment place, it’s not everyday and you don’t have to go if you don’t want to!
Residents of the esplanade, of which I am one, should be more concerned about the violent and destructive behaviour of teenagers in the town, or the endless moped and motorbikes doing laps of the esplanade and breaking God knows how many traffic laws.
But no, everyone bitches and moans about people having a place to go and have fun and a council that seems to be proactively supporting its community.
You’ve got your priorities wrong neighbours.
