Isle of Wight referee James Linington has announced his retirement after officiating 487 English Football League matches.
James has ended a career that took him from local park football on the Isle of Wight to becoming one of the English Football League’s most experienced Championship referees.
The 47-year-old says that health issues have forced him to step away from the game sooner than he had hoped.
Reflecting on the decision, James said:
“Today, I made one of the toughest decisions of my life and officially hung up my whistle as a professional football referee.
“After many years of commitment, sacrifice and unforgettable memories, my refereeing journey has come to an end.”
Throughout his professional career, James remained based on the Isle of Wight while most officials at his level lived on the mainland, meaning every appointment began with a ferry crossing.
Explaining why he never moved away, he said:
“Living on the Isle of Wight meant every appointment started with a ferry journey. The travelling, the logistics and the time away from home were never easy.
“Many people asked why I didn’t move to the mainland, but that was never something I wanted to do. My family has always come first, and I wanted to raise them on the island I call home.”
James first picked up a whistle at the age of 16 after being released by professional clubs as a player. He later spent 2 years as a Premier League assistant referee before joining the Football League referees’ list in 2008.
His first Football League appointment came in October 2008 when he took charge of Yeovil Town against Crewe Alexandra in League One. Just 3 months later he made his Championship debut, officiating Watford’s match against Burnley.
In 2010 he refereed the League Two Play-off Final at Wembley. Six years later he became one of the inaugural full-time Select Group 2 referees, officiating predominantly Championship fixtures.
Looking back on where it all began, James said:
“When I first started refereeing local park football on the Isle of Wight at the age of 16, after being released by professional clubs as a player, I could never have imagined where the journey would take me.
“From running the line in the Premier League, refereeing at Wembley, and becoming a full-time professional referee, I’ve been fortunate enough to live a dream that once seemed impossible.”
By the time he blew the final whistle on his career, James had officiated 487 English Football League matches, including 325 in the Championship.
One of the most high-profile moments of James’s later career came in October 2024 when he sent off Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney during a Championship match against Blackburn Rovers. Rooney later accepted the dismissal.
Despite the impressive statistics, James says the friendships he made will always matter more.
“The statistics are something I’m incredibly proud of: 487 EFL league matches, including 325 Championship games. But what I’ll treasure most are the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”
James reserved special thanks for his family, whose support made years of travelling possible, as well as the many people who helped him along the way.
Barry Wade received particular mention. James credited the former Isle of Wight referee with talking him out of resigning on more than one occasion during the early years of his career.
James also thanked former Island referee Ron Groves, fellow official Kev Downer, Alan Gurney, his father John, Rob Harris, Gary Willard and many others who encouraged and supported him throughout his career.
His retirement, however, was not the ending he had envisaged.
“This isn’t the way I imagined my career ending. Unfortunately, a medical condition has meant my journey has finished a little sooner than I had hoped.
“While that’s difficult to accept, I’m incredibly grateful for everything refereeing has given me.”
James also expressed the hope that another Island referee will one day follow in his footsteps.
“I sincerely hope another official from the Isle of Wight can follow the same path and continue flying the flag for our island at the highest level.”
He concluded:
“It’s been an incredible journey, one that I’ll always be proud of.”
So sorry to hear this James, I have always followed your refereeing career with great interest and each weekend I would look out for you on the highlights programmes. As a fellow Islander born and bred, I supported Preston North End for my sins and whenever we had you doing our games we always seemed to do well, so I shall miss that. I do hope your medical problems can be resolved and I wish you all good luck in everything you do in the future. All the very best to you.
