Developers are having a third try at getting approval for a new housing estate in Whitwell.
A consultation was held with Niton and Whitwell Parish Council and residents in 2018 for a scheme that included 26 houses, a shop and a playground.
Proposals for 20 houses on the greenfield site behind the High Street were then submitted in December 2019 to the council, scrapping the additional aspects. The plans were withdrawn four months later for further consideration.
Now, an application has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council for 24x 2, 3 and 4-bed houses.
None of the homes are said to be affordable, despite the council’s wishes that a third of properties in a development over 10 houses be affordable.
In documents submitted as part of the application, the developer, Perry Properties IW, has said it will enter into a legal agreement with the council to either provide or pay contributions towards affordable housing, although there is no mention of it in any other document so far submitted.
Agents for the development, MJH Architectural Services, said the scheme would be fairly low-density, suitable for the village location, which will blend in with the surrounding properties.
Vehicle access would be from the High Street, with a bridge to be built over the stream between 2 properties.
The field in question, known as School House Meadow, is located in a potential flood zone but houses are proposed to be built at least 20 metres away from the watercourse, in an area that has a low probability of flooding.
It is proposed additional parking is included in the scheme to compensate for residents along the High Street, who already have an issue parking.
To view the plans, 21/01827/FUL, you can visit the council’s planning register. Comments on the application will be submitted until 26th November. 4 objections have already been lodged against the major development, with 1 saying it would spoil the village and another accusing the developers of cramming in more houses.
Niton and Whitwell Parish Council will be discussing the application at a meeting on 15th November.
A playground used to be a delightful addition to have in any village when children were normal. Now, with the combination of affordable housing, in other words other people subsidising those who can’t afford their growing family’s home, the likelyhood, going by other areas already ruined by such, will be the playground will become a hangout for drunks, drugs, and late night noise.
Whitwell, welcome to the new inclusive P.C world that pre this all decent people used to envy, enjoy your last autumn of peace.
so build on a flood plain plenty of brown envolopes
Not on a flood plain, it’s on a hill.
They should add up all of these planning applications and see just how many new houses there will be !
20 here 6 there etc etc .
This soon adds up to hundreds and the majority not affordable!!!!
Are builders going to build for no profit ?????
And also our infrastructure Hospital Doctors Dentists etc etc ,cannot support more people……
One day someone may wake up and smell the coffee !!!!!
Probably when the concrete jungle is finished !!!!!
We need green space trees to help with global warming…
Wildlife conservation should also be considered…
Why would you live in Whitwell has no facilities, aging population, so why not double the size and get shops etc built with them.
I need to object to this and all developments. Need to keep demand high for housing so my house price goes up. The more it goes up more like being middle class I feel. Voting Tory helps too, we all know can’t be middle class if you don’t vote Tory.
A Doctors surgery and Dental Practice are now included in the proposals. Then again perhaps they’re not.
All well and good proposing a Dr’s surgery and a Dentist surgery ,where are they going to get the Doctor and Dentist from ??????
Try to find a Dentist!!!!!!
I feel you are right saying perhaps they are not !!!!!!
This is a green field site if we are going to slow climate change then we got to stop putting down concrete much better to fill it with trees time is running out
If you add up all the front gardens that get turned into concrete forecourts too, it’s no surprise the environment is suffering. People buy a house with trees in the garden, they cut down the trees & build another house in the garden or get rid of the front garden & put gravel all over everything, if the garden has a hedge round it, that goes & a fence gets put up instead. It’s happening all the time, will go on happening because people are selfish & don’t care about anything except getting their own way & doing exactly as they want. It’s no good relying on the few people who care, they outnumbered by those who don’t. Need new laws
School House Meadow, is located in a potential flood zone
…….
they should not be building here anyhow – there is no demand for turning a village into a town and wrecking the environment in the process.
where will the water go that would normally be soaked up – into existing houses that is where.
