A unique opportunity to manage one of the Island’s most iconic attractions is being offered by the Isle of Wight Council.
A new tenant is being sought to take over Browns Golf Course and Café on Culver Parade, Sandown, with the aim of re-opening the facilities in time for the Summer season.
The council is offering a 5-year lease on the café and 18-hole putting green at the front of the Browns site.
Options for the remainder of the Browns site are currently being explored with 3rd parties.
The closing date for offers to be submitted is 12:00 on Friday 5th May.
Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet member for environment and heritage, has said:
“We recognise that Browns is a well-loved part of Sandown’s resort heritage, and an important part of the town’s tourism offer.”
“We would therefore like to reassure the community we are working hard to re-open this popular attraction as quickly as possible by seeking a new tenant to take it on.”
“By granting a five-year lease we are hopeful this will make it an attractive proposal to potential operators and bring about welcome investment. We’re looking forward to seeing what interest is out there.”
As previously reported by Island Echo, the Council was notified in January that the current lessee would not carry on for another season. The local authority said that they were ‘looking at options to re-advertise or manage the golf course in house.’
It would appear that they have now decided to go for the former option and the local community will hope that they can fulfil their wish for the facilities to re-open between the end of the deadline on Friday 5th May and the Summer season.

So why did they licence a van to supply refreshments outside of the Dinosaur Museum? There’s enough cafes etc in the area already without taking trade from anyone operating Browns..
What chance did the last tenants have on a two year lease/?
Now we have a five year lease, who in there right mind would take up such a short lease, you
would never get back the money you put in.
And that’s exactly the game The Council are playing”well we offered a longer lease etc etc”having already earmarked for a developer over here who no doubt has friends on The Council, they have to be one of the most corrupt.despused Councils in The UK!
Spot on. The Pinks will be developing this site within a few years. Remember where you heard it.
So who is liable to repair the roof and electrics??
And how long before a developer moves in on the land behind Brown’s??
Best turn it into housing. Someone pass me a brown envelope.
Sandown is Sandown !!!! it needs a fortune spent there to get it anywhere near a attractive seaside town ,which won’t happen with the council wanting to make a fortune too
Hold on our roads need more than a fortune spent on them too ,toss up between the two ,,,,, difficult one please help
Bring back the great boating lake.
Won’t be long before it turns into a kids play ground like the Ocean hotel
If nobody on the council wanted to take it on, i wonder why? Too many restrictions on the lease, rent and business tax too high for any projected income. If all of the former where of a reasonable nature there would be lots of interest. It would seem that the council don’t really want a tenant. ????
It needs maintenance and new kitchen fixtures but the Council expects the leasers to pay for that. In the meantime the Council should be cutting the grass and upkeeping the grounds.
Like Northwood House, Ryde Theatre etc. etc .It is another example of criminal negligence.
Not sure you know what your talking about. Northwood house is run by a charity it’s not council and nothing to do with IOW council! It’s also a great venue and hasn’t been neglected!
A unique way to waste your money!
You do the roof electrics etc, plough money and heart and soul into it a 5yr lease and no renewal !!!!
Waiting for planning permission?????
Well that is the question????!!!!!….
