The Isle of Wight College has announced the launch of TECH:TRUCK, the brand new mobile education and technology roadshow with the wheels set firmly in motion for a busy inaugural year touring local schools and community events.
The truck is part of the Government’s Strategic Development Funding which gave almost £1.9million to Hampshire’s and the Isle of Wight’s Chambers of Commerce in order to develop digital, AI, marine, green construction and green energy technologies.
The truck itself is designed to showcase marine, engineering and digital industries and careers within those industries. It has so much technology on board that it can accommodate up to 18 active participants at a time and the technology includes, a 3D printer, drones, virtual reality (VR) headsets, augmented reality, coding, hybrid electricity powered cars and a robotic arm.
TECH:TRUCK aims to promote women in engineering and engage children and young adults with industry-led, cutting-edge technologies by showcasing a breadth and depth of forward-thinking engineering career opportunities within the digital, maritime and net zero technologies sectors.
The project has been developed in collaboration with 6 other local education provider; HSDC, Eastleigh College, City of Portsmouth College, City College Southampton, Fareham College, Brockenhurst College as well as The Institute of Technology and The Solent Local Economic Partnership. They will all be utilising TECH:TRUCK throughout 2023 to increase awareness and exposure to the changing landscapes within the engineering technologies sectors.
TECH:TRUCK visitors will get the opportunity to interact with all showcased technologies, including virtual and augmented reality systems, marine and flight simulation technologies, fully programmable robotic arms, drones, 3D printers and more. The interactive vehicle has been expertly converted and customised by Sugoi Campers. TECH:TRUCK’s industry-led equipment comes from ever-strengthening relationships between business and education.
Matt Johnson, Director of the South Coast Institute of Technology, says:
“The South Coast Institute of Technology is proud to be supporting the TECH:TRUCK. The South Coast needs more people with enhanced digital and engineering skills. Closing this gap starts with inspiring young people to come into these industries. We love TECH:TRUCK and think it is a great way for children to learn about the different careers and gain some exciting hands-on experience with state-of-the-art technology.”
For its first visit to the Island, the TECH:TRUCK will be based onsite at the Newport college campus and the CECAMM (Whippingham) campus. Island schools and employers are being invited to book their chance to enjoy it while it is here and it will also be coming back again later into the summer.

They need to be promoting hands on trades, mechanics, builders etc the country is crying out for skills!
