A 26-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving following a collision on Beaper Shute near Ryde this morning (Sunday).
Emergency services were called to the scene between Harding Shute and Brading Road at just gone 06:00, as first reported by Island Echo.
The male driver and his female passenger, both aged in their 20s, suffered injuries in the crash when a black Vauxhall Corsa left the carriageway and crashed into trees at the side of the road. No other vehicles were involved.
The main road between Ryde and Sandown remains closed in both directions whilst Police await the outcome of hospital assessments on both the driver and the passenger. The front seat passenger, who has been described as having serious and potentially life-changing injuries, is thought to have now been given the all clear at hospital.
The driver has been arrested on suspicion of both drink and drug driving and is undergoing further medical assessments. He failed a roadside breath test and a drugs wipe.
Traffic is extremely heavy on Green Lane near Ashey and on Smallbrook Lane towards Westridge this lunchtime as motorists divert around the road closure. A car has also broken down at the top of Smallbrook Lane at the junction with Great Preston Road.
Southern Vectis say that they are working to establish a shuttle service for those wishing to go to Tesco but there will be no guaranteed connections to Routes 2 and 3 in any direction. Routes 2 and 3 are currently diverting via St Helens and Nettlestone.
It is hoped that the road will re-open shortly, having already been closed for 7 hours.
UPDATE @ 13:21 – Beaper Shute has now re-opened in both directions following recovery of the car. Both casualties have been declared as having minor injuries only.
The 26-year-old driver has provided a blood sample for analysis, the outcome of which will determine whether charges are brought against the individual.

Yesterday a 22-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after rolling her car into a field near Ashey.

Quite a cocktail then, drink and drugs, worrying thing is , there’s many more like him on our roads..
Anyone of us could be a victim of lowlife like this, thank god no-one was court up with this..
The word is spelt Caught
Thank you….predictive text needs switching off sometimes.
If the blood test is positive for either being over the drink or drug drive limit, this crash happened at 6am!
If positive i hope the book is thrown at him.
Shoot the stupid b#st*rd
The lockdown appears to be working well.
Probably coming back from Clapham Common. Hysteria at it’s worse. How many caught covid and then took to back for their elderly mums. Mental.
Should have to pay for all the emergency services tied up with this pillocks total stupidity,.
Crush the car lock him up and throw away the key !!!!!
Lucky no one else was involved.
In some South American countries, families have to feed prisoners otherwise they starve…… Just a thought!
Sounds like a plan lol .
Take his licence away, at least until he’s 65, might have some sense by then.
Lovely to know that he’ll get whack with a 30p fine, told to buck his ideas up and allowed back on the roads again within a year! Shameful!
Yeah and when he finally kills a cyclist or motorcyclist there will be plenty of hand wringing but it never brings back the poor dead victim. Low life of the greatest degree.
Permanent licence ban. Heavy sentence.
This is the way the island is going. Widespread drug running and feral youth doing whatever they want unchecked. It’s not such a safe place to live anymore.
Disgusting. Why are there so many selfish idiots these days who think it is ok to drive a motor vehicle when they have drank, snorted and/or injected God only knows what into their bodies. I don’t feel sorry for them. I am concerned for other innocent motorists who could become involved in accidents caused by these morons. The courts really need to come down hard on these idiots.
