A team from Discover the World in Surrey will be raising vital funds for The Brain Tumour Charity by taking on the challenge of walking around the Isle of Wight non-stop in a relay style race this weekend.
Dawn Evans has been inspired to hold this event by Vicki Beale, a close colleague at holiday firm Discover the World who has recently been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour. Vicki is a born and bred Islander and as Vicki loves the Isle of Wight so much Dawn has said it is only fitting to hold the challenge here.
Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Dawn has said:
“We are really looking forward to taking on this challenge for such an important cause. Vicki is such an important part of the Discover the World family and we were shocked at how devastating this cancer is and we are determined to raise more awareness and as much money as we can for further research into this killer disease.
“We all love a challenge at Discover the World and although we have to cover 109kms non-stop, we want to be able to achieve this in 24 hours. We have called the challenge ‘Victory for Vicki’”.
Discover the World is aiming to raise £5,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity through their JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dawn-evans19.
Geraldine Pipping, The Charity’s Head of Fundraising, said:
“We are extremely grateful for all the efforts made by our fantastic fundraisers and wish them all the very best. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and, unlike other cancers, survival rates have not improved over the last 40 years.
“We are leading the way in changing this and truly fighting brain tumours on all fronts through our work. We receive no government funding and rely 100% on voluntary donations, so it’s only through the efforts of people like those at Discover the World that we can change these shocking statistics in the future and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year.”
The Victory for Vicki challenge starts in Niton on Saturday 28th April at 10:00 and the aim is to finish by 14:00 on Sunday 29th April. However, the hope is to complete the challenge within 24 hours.
