Hundreds of local residents have reported concerns of a strong smell of gas in the Sandown Bay area this evening (Monday), prompting the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Southern Gas Networks to respond.
The overwhelming stench has been reported to be strong across Sandown and Lake, prompting fears of a gas leak. Numerous calls have been made to SGN reporting the issue and at least one resident called the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to Napoleon’s Landing, Sandown.
It is thought the smell is associated with the emptying of tanks on board tankers moored up on the outskirts of Sandown Bay – an occurrence that is becoming all the more regular.
No gas leaks have been located, despite searches by engineers.
Residents should not be concerned.
