Shanklin Ladies faced a tough Millbrook side in Hampshire County Women’s League Division 1 on Sunday.
The Island team headed across the Solent hoping to maintain their 100% unbeaten record in the league and challenge for top spot. Millbrook came off the back of recent wins, with their only loss coming against Shanklin at home.
The game started at a fast pace with both teams making quick breaks to test the 2 goalkeepers. Shanklin dominated possession in the middle of the field, with Millbrook losing the ball through inconsistent passes being picked up by their opponents. Even though Shanklin had possession and were playing well, they were unable to get a shot on target.
Millbrook made the most of every opportunity they had, which led to Shanklin keeper Kirren Shaw making a series of saves to keep her side in the game. The Island side eventually took a first half lead, with a 30-yard free kick from forward Gemma Woodford sailing over the Millbrook keeper before nestling in the top corner.

In the 2nd half, Millbrook came on strong looking for the equaliser and again testing Shanklin’s defence. Millbrook ending up having several free kicks close to the edge of the penalty area due to heavy challenges from Shanklin but were kept at bay with some excellent defence from the Shanklin back 4.
However, a parried save from Shanklin’s keeper led to a Millbrook’s Rachael Cardy tapping in their only goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining.
A yellow card for Millbrook came soon after their goal, following an altercation with the Shanklin keeper. Shanklin were then kept penned in their own half for remaining 10 minutes but defended solidly to prevent a strong physical Millbrook from taking all 3 points.
