Reigning Hampshire Division 1 champions Shanklin Ladies defeated Division 4 side Wight Eagles Ladies in the Hampshire Invitational Cup at the County Ground on Sunday (22nd January).
This was the 1st time 2 female Isle of Wight sides had been drawn against each other in a cup competition.
The star of the game was Shanklin’s captain Gemma Woodford, who scored, set up a goal and hit the crossbar twice.
Gemma Woodford opened the scoring for Shanklin in the 19th minute, sending a tricky bouncing shot from the edge of the area past the Wight Eagles’ goalkeeper (1-0).
Sienna Brennan grabbed the hosts’ 2nd goal, which she knocked past the Eagles’ keeper from 5 yards (2-0).
Shanklin’s 3rd goal came courtesy of a 10-yard strike from Angelica Tatchell on the half-hour mark, set up by Ceri Kilcullen (3-0).

Wight Eagles gave a good account of themselves in the 2nd half against opponents 3 divisions above.
The Eagles’ Ellena Boakes forced a good save from the Shanklin keeper in the 71st minute.
Towards the end of the game, Shanklin had further chances to score, with Gemma Woodford hitting the crossbar in the 81st minute and the 1st minute of injury time.

After the game, Wight Eagles manager Dan Verstaten said:
“I was very pleased to see that we didn’t concede in the 2nd half. It was a really good performance from Ayisha Keyes, who was marking Gemma Woodford. Chloe Woodford also played really well in midfield.”
Shanklin Ladies’ joint managers Shannon Kilcullen and Kate Ednay said:
“We were happy to score 3 goals, keep a clean sheet and get through to the next round. We were also very happy to see 2 Island ladies’ sides compete against each other in a cup competition.
