Sandown Town Council, with Waterside Pool’s Todd Miller, supported CPR training for over 30 volunteers and users of the Broadway Centre, as part of Restart A Heart Day and the Town Council’s provision of defibrillators at locations in the town.
Town Mayor Paddy Lightfoot said:
“The Town Council have provided defibrillators outside of the Library and at the Broadway Centre, and hope to add to provision in the future, alongside our other projects, and supporting training is part of our commitment.”
Over 30,000 people, in the UK, suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest every year and less than 10% survive, and Sandown Town Council have signed up to the British Heart Foundation’s CPR – Call Push Rescue – initiative.
Todd added:
“It was really good to work with so many enthusiastic volunteers, and with 80% of cardiac arrests outside of hospital happening in the home, it is important that more people understand what they can do to help loved ones, and increase chances of survival.”
Paddy concluded:
“Working with Todd, including with the Beach Safety Service in the Summer, reflects the priorities we have set within our limited resources, and highlights the value of working in partnership with volunteers”.
And to think how many more people they could have trained instead of wasting £6000 on 20 minutes of fireworks
