The revetment between Sandown and Shanklin will be closed for up to 3 weeks from early next month, it has been confirmed. The Isle of Wight Council is to carry out essential improvement and safety works along the revetment from 4th March. The work will involve clearing cliff fall debris from the walkway and improving areas where there is water constantly flowing across the promenade. It’s said that the works will take place over a week-long period 4th and 11th March. However, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are also due to carry out essential works in the area, imposing a 3-week long closure of the revetment using its emergency powers. This means the revetment could be closed until 25th March. A spokesperson for the local authority has said:
“Public safety is our top priority and as there will be constant vehicle and plant movements, for our works we will need to close the revetment between 4 March and 11 March”.

Well I certainly hope that they are very careful of all the Japanese knotweed embedded in the cliff face on the Shanklin end… mind you knotweed is very good at holding up the cliff face ! About the only thing it’s good for… humfff…
Pleased to see that, for possibly the first time in living memory, these works have been coordinated.
Perhaps one of our local councillors might like to point out to SSE that as well as their legal obligation for public safety they have one to minimise disruption and confirm that 24 hour working will be in operation to ensure that works are completed as quickly as possible.
They might also take the opportunity confirm if this really is an emergency, because we seem to be getting a lot of “emergency” works which are actually routine works carried out at short notice under emergency powers that could have been properly scheduled and may well constitute a misuse of those powers.
Ye im sure its going to be good quality..
Any chance of the stinking bogs being fixed at hink’s cafe ?? NAA i thought not..
I’m sure the works will improve the situation, so happy to wait for a few days.
Meanwhile, the sign says ‘advanced warning’, but as we all know, it should say ‘advance warning’!
It’s not a promenade, it’s a revetment and as such not a designated road, footpath, etc. so unless they block every set of steps off the beach, everyone will still walk along it and there is not much they can do about it. For the same reason they can’t ban cyclists.
Who cares sandown just a dump
Foolish and inaccurate. Sad you’ve missed it’s beauty. Suggest you revisit with your eyes open this time. It’s stunning.
People will walk along the beach instead.
