John Davies, who for many years has been heard shouting ‘oyez, oyez, oyez’ on the streets of Sandown, has died.
Mr Davies has represented the town as the official Town Crier for as long as anyone can remember, with his last outing being for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last weekend.
It’s thought he was the last remaining Town Crier on the Island following the retirement of Ryde’s Steve King last year.
John, who was a Brentford FC supporter, sadly passed away on Tuesday, aged 80, after a battle with cancer. His family say he was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
Sandown Carnival Association has said:
“John was a huge character at our events, a former committee member and a great supporter of carnival, he will be sadly missed by us all”.
John and I shared many frustrating moments as. Brentford tried to reach the Premiership, It was an honour to help him carry out what he knew would be his final cry at Sandown’s Jubilee celebration on Sunday, A lovely man who will be sadly missed by all. Condolences to Janet and family RIP John.
I knew John and his wife Janet from the scouts in west London and moved over to the Isle of Wight 4 and a half years ago and met up with them again,John was always going on about Brentford and I replied about qpr it was always good banter rest in peace John.
God bless you Mr Davies, a man who raised the profile of Sandown and was always there to support good causes and charities locally xx
