A Ryde man who was so ‘deeply intoxicated’ he can’t remember attempting to steal a coat from TK Maxx, has been fined £40.
Thomas Cornell, 40, of Green Street in Ryde, admitted a single charge of attempt theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (Tuesday 14th April).
Prosecuting, Giles Fletcher, told the court heard how on the 30th September 2025, Cornell entered TK Maxx on South Street in Newport.
Once inside the store, Cornell headed to the clothing section and picked up a black men’s jacket before making for the store’s exit where he was stopped by a member of staff. At the exit, the coat – valued at £59.99 – was recovered.
The court heard how Cornell was most recently in court back in January when he was convicted of another shoplifting offence.
Defending Cornell, Jim Osborne told the court that his client can’t remember the events of that day because he was ‘deeply intoxicated’.
Magistrates fined Cornell £40 and ordered he pay £85 costs.

More than likely drunk on free benefits on tax paid by pensioners on theirs
Time to stop numpties who commit crimes

Thousands spent to bring him to court only to be fined £40……this country is a total joke
