Officers from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have been conducting checks at a number of fuel stations across the Isle of Wight as part of a crackdown on illegal fuel and fuel laundering.
On Wednesday last week members of the public spotted government officials taking samples from fuel and conducting other checks at a number of fuel stations, prompting Island Echo to get in touch with HMRC.
Although the spokesperson said that HMRC cannot comment on identifiable individuals or companies, Island Echo understands that the garage visited in the picture above was found to be fully compliant and above board.
A spokesperson for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs said on Tuesday:
“HMRC fights fuel fraud on a wide range of fronts, which includes specialist units inspecting retail sites, detecting and dismantling fuel laundering plants and performing roadside checks on private and commercial vehicles.
“Working with our partner agencies, we have a rolling programme of oils activity throughout the UK, which can involve checking vehicles, both commercial and private, for rebated fuel misuse or visiting filling stations to ensure they are fully compliant.”
