Organisers of the Isle of Wight Randonnee have confirmed that May will see the return of the popular cycling event for the first time in 3 years.
The Randonnee, which was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021, will take place on Sunday 1st May 2022 providing there are no unlikely changes to COVID restrictions or Cycling UK guidance.
On the whole, the event will take place as you would expect but there will be some changes to reflect the ‘new normal’. Notably, there will be no rider registration on the day meaning anyone wishing to take part must register in advance – and places will be limited. There will also be changes to the checkpoint processes.
Cyclists will be pleased to know that the Randonnee will follow the Round the Island cycle route in a clockwise direction, with a choice of 100km or 55km.
The event will start at 09:00 and finish at 18:00, with further details expected to be shared shortly.
Registration for the 2022 Isle of Wight Randonnee is set to open at the beginning of February.
The IoW Randonnee was established by the Wayfarers in 1985 and uniquely follows a route around the whole of the Isle of Wight taking minor roads and lanes where possible enabling the rider to see and enjoy the best of the Island’s scenery.
How many people will be pleased with that news ?
I imagine people who value community events that are environmentally friendly, and also those who take part to raise a lot of money for numerus charities… so I’d say a lot of people would be pleased.
Sorry but these events should b on closed roads only as they do not ride in single file and don’t care about traffic
So let me get this right, you would advocate closing down long stretches of the Island’s road network just so they can ‘not ride’ in single file and ‘not care’ about traffic. . . an absolutely brilliant idea, sign me up.
Yes last time the event happened i came up behind a group of these cyclist riding three and four abreast. I gave a gentle toot to say i was behind them. All i got was vee signs and verbal abuse. Pleased Mmmm, not sure.
Well said Alan.
This is the major fund raising event of the year for the PTAs of several local primary schools who sell refreshments to participants. Several thousand pounds is also donated to local charities from the event.
really – do they not realise how offensive it is, being stuck behind a load middle age men and women clad in tight lycra with their backsides in your face, as you crawl along at 5mph behind them in your car, on roads that they haven’t even had the decency to pay road tax for.
Twit
So much pollution from riders emitting methane and vehicles held up with engines reving and running longer. So good for the Island .
Another twit.
