A prison officer at HMP Isle of Wight is said to have been seriously assaulted after being dragged into a cell and beaten by an inmate.
Sources say the officer sustained fairly serious injuries as a result of the unconfirmed incident, in which the officer was grabbed, pulled into a cell and beaten.
It is thought the assault took place behind the walls of Parkhurst earlier this week. The reason is unknown.
Back in November a prison officer had his throat slashed in the neighbouring Albany prison.
The Ministry of Justice have historically refused to comment on internal events, which has led to frustration within local media and in amongst the ranks. Large, life-threatening incidents have been often portrayed to be fairly minor.
Previously the MoJ have said:
“We do not tolerate violence against our hard working and dedicated staff, and when incidents like this occur, we work closely with the police to push for the strongest possible punishment.
“The Justice Secretary has been clear that levels of violence in prisons are unacceptable, which is why she announced a major overhaul of the prison system last week”.
The MoJ have been approached for a statement.
