Cowes Sports have ended a run of 3 successive defeats by holding 3rd-placed Portchester to a draw this afternoon (Saturday). The Yachtsmen opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a deflected shot from Connor Kelly that looped over the Portchester keeper and into the right corner of the goal (0-1). Portchester equalised on the half hour mark through full back Issiaga Kaba from a corner (1-1). Cowes ended the 1st half trailing by a single goal after defender Liam Robinson headed the home side into the lead a minute before the half time whistle (2-1). Half time: AFC Portchester 2-1 Cowes Sports The 2nd half began with Portchester on the front foot and Ed Hatt having to clear a further header from the goal line. Cowes threw on 2 of their best substitutes – John McKie and Fin Phillips – shortly before the hour mark in an attempt to take at least a point from the game. John McKie (left) A minute after entering the field of play, McKie crossed the ball to McFarlane, for the powerful centre forward to smash the ball into the back of the net from 6 yards (2-2). 10 minutes from full time, the Yachtsmen made a further substitution with Brandon Hayward thrown into the fray. Cowes survived the remainder of the game and could have taken all 3 points when Connor Kelly had the ball in the home side’s net, but the goal was disallowed for supposed handball by Fin Phillips. Cowes Sports: Hatt, Wykes, West, Triggs, Oatley (c), Hancott, Colson, Cook (Phillips), McFarlane, Neale (Mckie), Kelly Subs: Hayward, W. Bridi, G. Bridi Cowes Sports man-of-the-match: Ollie West The Yachtsmen’s point leaves them 8th in the Wessex Premier, 2 points behind 5th-placed Laverstock & Ford Cowes face bottom club Lymington Town at Westwood Park on Tuesday evening, with a win enough to see them reach the playoff positions. Kick off is at 19:45.
PORT BEAT POTTERS AT BEATRICE AVENUE
Newport (IW) v Verwood Town Photos: Graham BrownNewport overcame the team 1 place above in Wessex Division 1 by the best of 3 goals in front of over 200 spectators. At the game, Jordan Browne was presented with a trophy to mark his 200th goal for the County Town club. The Port took the lead when midfielder Harry Catania took advantage of hesitation in the Verwood defence by bursting through their back four and poking the ball through the legs of the advancing keeper (1-0). Half time: Newport (IW) 1-0 Verwood TownJoe Butcher The Potters equalised 2 minutes from the restart through an unstoppable long distance shot from Harrison Whitelaw that flew into the top corner of the goal (1-1). The Port restored their lead in the 63rd minute through Sonny Myram, who – while lying prostate on the penalty spot – kept his composure to slide the ball into an empty net for his 1st goal in senior football (2-1). Verwood piled on the pressure in the final stages of the game but were unable to break down a determined and well-organised Newport defence. Frustration for the away side led to a member of their management being red carded in the dying embers of the game. Just as well they’ve delayed the lake hill works because this would have caused chaos with everything having to go around Perowne way then via Yaverland again.
Island Roads would, of course, describe it as “working very well” and “causing no problems “

This will continue until Isle of Wight Council and RSPB sort out the sluice gates at Bembridge.
Groundhog day! At least the birds looked very happy on the wetlands this morning when I was on my diversion.

And nothing ever happens.. It beggers belief really.. The chaos this causes..Inadequate diversions full of pot holes – pinch points, accidents waiting to happen. And Island roads – The Environment agency – Sit on their hands and do.. You’ve got it.= Nothing.!!.

All they have to do is open the sluice gates in Bembridge and by nothing short of a miracle the levels at Morton Common will drop almost immediately, i appreciate that is too simple a remedy though.

Can we get an official comment from IWCC explaining what they are doing to prevent future closures and giving a timescale for a resolution to this ongoing issue.
This is a major artery route and it is completely unacceptable for it to be closed for a day or more every time it rains.
You have to be joking !
Iow council informing us mere mortals and cash cow’s as to what is going on / timescale ( they probably can’t work it out )
But also they have been very busy with how they can mug us with our council tax, so no room for any other problems…..
Also does anyone know if Briddlesford rd
is open / ever going to open …??????
Must be having an adverse reaction on Briddlesford farm shop / cafe …..
Went past Briddlesford earlier going to Wootton & no it’s still closed

The marsh that courses these problems need a major change, may I suggest digging out a large lake that’s at least 5 metres deep by 3 or 4 acres. This would hold a vast amount of water with over flow gates to release over spill in to the river.on the road side a channel can be dug out and renforcement at a hight along the road with steel interlocking sheets. The river needs dredging every 2 years ? This would not impact the environment, infact it would be a great nature reserve for wild foul. The peat that lays beneath the marsh land could be sold off. I have no idea whom controls the gates at bembridge marina end, but they can only be opened on the out going tide that much is evident.
The environment agency has the control over the sluice gates. They are under a computer control program which is set up to maintain the water level in Brading Marshes for the benefit of the birds since the marsh is owned by the RSPB. Why they are given priority is totally beyond me and should not be allowed.
