Emily Brothers and Bob Seely – who are both standing in the 2024 General Election for Isle of Wight East and Isle of Wight West respectively – have paid their respects to D-Day veterans. Emily Brothers, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Isle of Wight East said:
“Today commemorates the remarkable service of our veterans and all those who sacrificed their lives in the D-Day landings. “Labour is deeply proud of our veterans and Armed Forces. Theirs is the ultimate public service. “D-Day 80 is an opportunity for us all to pay tribute to the D-Day generation and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our country and our values.”
Bob Seely, Conservative candidate for the Isle of Wight West said:
“God Bless those D-Day heroes who are still with us. “Their sacrifice marked the beginning of the end of World War II, and the liberation of much of Europe from the Nazis. Eastern Europe had to wait another four decades for freedom from Soviet tyranny. “Thank you to all Veterans who have served since, and for those who kept us safe during the Cold War. “By the time of D-Day, my English granddad Billy was already dead, killed in the desert of North Africa in the Battle of Gazala on 6 June 1942. On the morning he died, he was ordered to lead his Regiment, the South Notts Hussar, to fight to the last round and the last man. They pretty much did. His Regiment was reformed for D-Day. My German grandmother would be killed by Soviet troops at the end of the war. “Grandad’s 2 cousins, Islanders Charles and Frank, had been killed as young men in World War I, serving with the Hampshires and the IW Rifles. “It’s worth remembering the price we all pay when deterrence fails. I truly hope we do not make the same mistake this century.”
Liberal Democrat candidate for the Isle of Wight West, Nick Stuart, has said:
“It is important that we recognise this anniversary and the community engagement in so many events both small and large. As a local representative I wanted to share a formal recognition of the efforts and history behind today, recognising the few from 6th June 1944 who are with us still. “Today we recognise the effort and sacrifices of so many people who contributed and took part in the start of the liberation of Europe. One of the most complex military operations possible with the planning and logistics covering southern England with major elements on the Isle of Wight. “We can be proud of the efforts made by so many in our community and of the wider free world towards the success of the venture. Recognising the dreadful toll of the battlefield on the people at the front and their families at home, as so many of us know. “I was pleased to recognise this important day at a moving ceremony in Brighstone and encouraged to see the local school attending the raising of the flag by the local British Legion. “In towns and villages across the Island we celebrate the importance of this day to our country and our neighbours in Europe. Reminding us of the vigilance needed to protect what we hold dear.”

Rare for the Island Echo to acknowledge that candidates other than Seely are running for MP. Every day, there is at least one article with him making a “promise” (one of the same promises he made years ago but did nothing about) or grinning inanely outside a bar, etc. Very biased coverage. Disappointing.
Relax Peter, it’s the Island Echo not CNN
She blinded the whole world with her own eyes
is this Lady visually impaired, as no one has made this clear?
not that it matters but because we live in this woke era people are afraid to ask questions.
It’s very obvious that she is, and she has made this very clear from her own website and campaign
Well said. Not a sausage from the two Lib Debs. Just a Seely fanfare (undeserved).
The Tories are desecrating the memory of the greatest generation by selling everything they fought for to the highest bidder. Most of the country is owned by hedge funds in other countries. The Tories have done what Hitler could not. Time for the people to fight for our freedom again from these freeloaders and con artists. We have to take it all back without giving a penny in return, it’s all been stolen from us, and we want it back.
Vote REFORM then as people died to prevent a lot of foreign people invading our country, changing it forever.
Now illegal entry is given food, medical treatment, and eventually a free home and EVERY privilege that our ancestors died for to give to us, not every chancer with a mobile and dingy
People died fighting against people like you who blame people who are “different” for the ills of the country.
Give your head a wobble and look in the mirror. Is that a toothbrush moustache under your nose.
Bob Seely, hypocrite, liar, and a friend to the most corrupt prime minister ever. Bye Bob, your true colours are that you have respect only for yourself, you allowed sewage to be pumped into the seas around the island, never once stepped up to help any “working” people on the island, so it is best you enjoy the few deluded days you have left as a local MP.
Well what do you know, sunak and seely are so alike, they all skip off early at events, seely tried it at Ventnor last year, he wanted to leave a poppy day event early to get home in time for lunch. Bye bye Bob and bye bye sunakerd.
Come on Mr Seely, you should be calling out the PM on leaving early yesterday as an ex officer. That is not how we treat our veterans and for a ITV interview to defend what he said the other day, its disgraceful.
Tories are a walking disaster. We all thought Johnston was a clown but had something about him but this PM is more boring than John Major and is totally useless.
Major was boring, but intelligent.
The problem with Brexit is that it left the country being run by Brexiters.
In other words, run by self-serving spivs and incompetent idiots.
