In the only game to be played in Harwoods Division 1 this Saturday, 3rd placed Ventnor were beaten by 3rd-from bottom Northwood St Johns at Cowes Community Club. Ventnor were missing captain and prolific scorer Emerson Tattersall, who suffered a broken cheekbone the previous Saturday, as well as his striking partner Charlie Urry. Northwood were the better side in the 1st half, opening the scoring through a 7th-minute strike from Lewis Blackmore (1-0). The home side then added a 2nd in the 20th minute through a towering header from Arthur Balchin (2-0). The closest Ventnor came to scoring was through a Will Hedley header that glanced off the upright. Half time: Northwood St Johns 2-0 Ventnor In the 2nd half, Jack Barsdell made the game a competitive contest at around the hour mark with a 25-yard free kick into the top corner of the goal (2-1). However, Northwood regained their 2 goal advantage 2 minutes later through a Leigh McKenzie header (3-1).
Ventnor were unlucky not to have made the contest closer with Martin Barrow being denied by the woodwork. The away side finished the game with 10 men after Simon Crates was sent off, apparently for retaliating to the actions of a Northwood player. After the game, for Northwood John Cook said:
“Northwood played very well and deserved the 3 points. It was a good performance against a strong Ventnor side.”
Ventnor manager Gary Gee commented:
“This was a disappointing result today. We didn’t play well, had no fluency, and gave away silly goals. Just too many changes to the side today. “It didn’t help with our 3rd red card in as many games and all 3 for retaliation, which is very disappointing. “But we move on. Well done Northwood. Deserved the points.”
