UPDATE – The Jolly Fryer will continue to trade from Chale, resuming Wednesday 18th August. Read the latest update at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/chippy-tea-after-all-the-jolly-fryer-will-continue-to-visit-chale/.
The Jolly Fryer has been delivering chippy teas to the residents of Chale for over 40 years, but the mobile fish and chip van will no longer be visiting the village after having permission revoked by the owner of the former Chale Stores.
Every Wednesday, Andy and Caroline Phillips head over to the South Wight to visit the rural village of Chale – a sought-after weekly treat for villagers and those living slightly further afield.
However, the American owner of the former Chale Stores building, Vern Tyerman, has revoked permission for the mobile chippy to trade from the car park with immediate effect.
Locals are up in arms about the decision with many saying that the businessman does not own the car park (according to Land Registry) and therefore doesn’t have the right to revoke permission. There have been suggestions that fences are about to be erected around the site which would prevent the van from being parked there.
Planning permission has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council to convert the former shop and cafe, demolishing part of the building to create 2 separate homes with a third built next to it.
The Jolly Fryer will still visit neighbouring villages of Niton (Fridays) and Godshill (Thursdays), as well as regular stops in St Helens (Saturdays) and Nettlestone (Thursday and Saturday).
Andy and Caroline have taken to social media to say:
“We’re sorry to say that The Jolly Fryer, after over 40 years (in more than one ownership), will no longer be visiting Chale Green.
“We are very grateful to all our loyal regular customers who’ve kept us going through thick and thin. We’ve survived all sorts of weather, lean times and pandemics but the march of progress has us beat. We knew this was in the pipeline but had hoped for more notice to pass on to you all. In our hands we’d have given weeks, if not months. A day or two isn’t our style…
“We shall still be at all our other locations which can be found on our website so if you don’t mind travelling a short distance we’ll be happy to serve you at any of those.
“Thanks once again, hope to see some of you elsewhere”.
This so called American just what is his problem with upsetting everyone in chale closes the live blood shop of the village and won’t sell it to anyone now stopping the only chance locals have of having a chippy tea and all that goes with them I bet he doesn’t have many friends by the sound of it . Surly there is dome where else he could park up maybe in Stubbings agrigcultural yard got to be somewhere
he also probably doesn’t live in the village just a mainland developer only on the island to make a quick buck Surprised the council gave permission for change of use into houses?
Pretty sure of success with his planning application, then? Sadly.
Surely there is another location there. The van just parks on the road in Nettlestone.
How to make enemies. If i were a resident of chale and close to that shop, they could put it on my drive, a good way of sticking two fingers up at that damn yankee.
Another scum developer out to make quick money, i bet these properties will be holiday homes as i am sure they will be out of the range of any locals.
I would say refuse his planning application…… but I wouldn’t be surprised if its already going forwards
You just couldn’t make it up!!! What an absolute idiot!! Trouble is, The isle of wight is big on supporting communities and small businesses (I’m sure we did the same for chale stores).
You, our happy American business friend, have just made yourself look bitter, selfish, petty and UNKIND!
IF he’s brought this recently, he most probably does not own the land (car park) otherwise it would be registered. Which begs the question, who does own it? It’s either passed on to a person or corporation, unless the person has no beneficiaries or the corporation, in winding up, does not pass on the asset to someone or another corporation. In that case it becomes Bona Vacantia and is essentially the property of the Crown, aka Her Maj. So, only the owner may say, get orf my land, and that is not the American man by the sound of it. Fencing it off wont help as that
s criminal damage and when it comes to be
soldhe
ll have a great big headachAlways gotta be one hasn’t there that wants to spoil everyone elses enjoyment with a load of gob and power
Hi please come to Wroxall would love fish n chips
He probably only bought it to make loads cash to buy an enormous stetson to put on his big head .
Totally ridiculous , let’s hope the car park is sorted out as to who owns it , before he starts building !!!!!!!
Although I don’t live in Chale I feel building work is over running the island and soon the concrete jungle won’t have any room for the locals ….
Shame on you Mr Vern Tyerman.
Take away this great service , are you not making money out of the chippy parking there for short time?
Typical greed money over people getting this service.
More houses don’t need them concrete jungle on it’s way!
