The Island’s first drive-thru Costa Coffee is one step closer to becoming a reality as drawings are submitted to the Isle of Wight Council as part of the redevelopment of Newport’s St George’s Retail Park.
The big brand is to join McDonald’s in having a drive-thru on the former home ground of Newport FC.
Further designs have now been submitted by the coffee giant, as it aims to finalise the layout of its new store, on the site next to Asda. They include a menu board and an order collection point.
In the images, the brand’s logo and coffee beans have been added to the side of the building and the planning application seeks permission for illuminated and non-illuminated signs.
View the plans, 22/00848/ADV, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 29th July.
The proposals, submitted by Isle of Wight-based developer Tony Wake and his company South Coast Leisure, were recently re-approved by the Isle of Wight Council. A change in the plans saw Costa added and the amount of retail floorspace reduced.
Meanwhile, work has started on Newport FC’s replacement football ground near the Racecourse Roundabout, off Fairlee Road. South Coast Leisure hopes the all-weather pitch and clubhouse would be completed by the autumn.
The Isle of Wight Council has required that the units at the new retail park are not used until the replacement football ground is available.

Rather behind, other coffee shops are closing in the country. The silly fad of having a coffee glued to your hand is on the way out.
A waste of time this will be …. after the initial week or so
no to multi nationals! yes to proper locals!
Yes – we have enough coffee shops – support the local ones that we have !!!,as long as the council don’t take away more parking spaces near them
I don’t think COSTA will find it a viable location . Self limiting disaster I suspect.
Why, with cost of living going up , I can buy a jar that makes 20/30 cups for same price as a cup of one Costa – just lazy rich people in their cars who can’t boil a kettle. And don’t get me started on cost of a bit of cake!.
Get in a car to buy a coffee?
To consume a product with scant resemblance to quality product as can be found at Isola etc in Newport. Some good roasteries to be found across this island.
Are they going litter picking around the island when everyone disposes of their empty cup’s ????
More litter to go with macdonalds….
Won’t get much ‘chav business’ like the burger and chicken joints, so pretty limited market over here.
Thank God! We’re running short of sh!te coffee shops! Not sure if one is enough though.
Yes please – lets kill off the local shops! Yes please lets generate more car journeys! Yes please to more building developments!
Not.
Out of town coffee shops and the like are destroying our towns – the Council need to start some joined up thinking and stop these needless and pointless developments.
I guess they will be self limiting as the viability is questionable anyway. Driving to them is very ecologically illogical , we need to support local town centre businesses, which are based here , not the multi nationals who do their best to avoid UK tax and simply benefit no-one.
Do we really need more coffee shops and fast food places? With the cost of living rising at a rate that no one can keep up with and people having to choose between eating and heating it just seems absurd. Lets save our small coffee shops & cafes not push them out of business.
I note the last comment. The units will not be used until the new football ground is available?
So, when will that be then? Will it be before next season? No. Will it be before the floating bridge is declared unfit for purpose? Possibly.
That coffee will be awfully cold by then.
