NETWORK RAIL SEEK TO DEMOLISH BUNGALOW IN SANDOWN OVER LANDSLIP FEARS

Network Rail is seeking permission to demolish a bungalow in Sandown as ground movement has prompted fears it could cause a landslip onto the Island Line train tracks. The empty bungalow – 15 Gordon Close, Sandown – currently sits on an embankment above the Shanklin to Ryde train line. However, planning agents AECOM on behalf of the train company, say the property is becoming more structurally unsound, with extensive cracks running through the property. It says the condition of the property is worsening and it would be more cost-efficient and effective to demolish the property, instead of undertaking extensive work to stabilise and repair it. A structural survey in 2022 found the cracks are most likely caused by subsidence and the foundations at the front of the property may have been impacted by the ground conditions. Evidence was also found indicating the property was at risk of a landslip, due to the moisture in the ground and the slope towards the railway, the agents said. The 3-bed bungalow, owned by Network Rail, is said to be in poor condition and suffering from damp by AECOM. If permission is granted, the demolition could take place from 4th March, when utilities would be disconnected, asbestos removed and the interior of the bungalow stripped. According to planning documents, there would be no redevelopment or rebuilding on the site, if the bungalow were to be demolished.
