An Isle of Wight holiday park is looking to provide entertainment later into the night but nimby neighbours have raised concerns about the potential ‘racket’ created.
Parkdean Resorts, owners of Thorness Bay Holiday Park, is asking permission to increase the times it can show films outdoors, plus boxing or wrestling events and live music, dance or entertainment, indoors and outdoors. The application goes as late as 01:30 for indoor sporting events.
It also wants to extend the hours it can sell alcohol, by bringing the start time forward as well as adding a horsebox bar outside.
The Isle of Wight Council’s licensing sub-committee is being asked to granting the variation, only part of it or refusing the application, after 2 objections were received.
1 objector said events run at the holiday park have been so loud it causes disturbance even through their double-glazed windows. They raised concerns about the extended activities, saying it was bad enough at the moment, let alone if it were to go on longer.
The other said they objected to the application on the basis of noise, nuisance and the adverse effects “15 hours of racket every day” neighbours and local businesses would experience.
Environmental health officers were satisified with the control measures in place but in light of the objections said they could consider requiring a Noise Management Plan.
Council officers spoke to objectors and came to some compromises, which would need to be agreed by Parkdean, including music only being played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings; outdoor entertainment limited between Easter and October; and the installation of an effective acoustic barrier around the designated area.
At the time of writing the council’s report, no concessions to the application had been offered by Parkdean.
In its licensing application, the solicitors acting on behalf of Parkdean said due to the conditions already attached to the premises licence of Thorness Bay, no further actions to mitigate any adverse effects were required.
It was hoped the extended hours could be introduced as soon as possible.
The licensing sub-committee will make its decision next Friday 22nd July.

Good luck to the two objectors, hope you have more luck with noise control than we have had with Away Resorts at Whitecliff Bay Bembridge.
Two questions. Will the park’s owners be living next to it?
Will those members on planning be in ear shot of it?
Then don’t give it the go ahead
Keep the noise and tawdry entertainment to Sandown or the mainland and let’s attract decent quality families to the currently few quiet areas left here
Answer to your two questions, no they wont be anywhere near the place and they wont care, as its all about the money.
We have been through it all here at Bembridge with Away Resorts and you will never win. They have ruined Hillway Road as a place to live, so be prepared.
The other danger is should a deep recession hit, and staycations numbers drastically reduce, some of these caravan parks could apply for an easy ‘change of use’, and if so, the sites could easily become cheap affordable living for permanent social housing to house the never ending flow of chancers and freeloaders fleeing to our shores.
Drugs, crime and anti social behaviour would then destroy living standards for decent people all year not just the glorious Summer months
This could well be the good times.
So the people that stay there aren’t decent?? Let sandown and mainland keep the tawdry entertainment?? And what noise do you hear from the camp?? and is Cowes week having late nights or must tawdry entertainment move to sandown or mainland
Cowes week is as it’s title implies, just for a week
Mostly decent people attend and most noise and damage is caused by the local chav drunk and drugged not the visitors.
Locals earn from such renting homes so a great event
The lesser classes aren’t content with getting a little merry, unless they are smashing property or a bye-standers body they can’t enjoy themselves now
it’s already in their backyard so they’re not nimbys. perhaps they’re genuine sufferers IE.
The council won’t help much with any noise complaints, pretty much useless, fill out a form for 2 weeks send it in and nothing happens. Get a copy of what this place can and can’t do, as they will try and get away with things they are not covered for.
Unfair. Noise travels in open country such as these parks. Hundreds would be affected. I live in town & noise is accepted as part of urban living but you don’t sign up for it when you live in a country area
who was there first ? the holiday centre or local residents this is a holiday resort not ! a retirement area for overners
totally agree
I hate to sound like a Killjoy, but…
Midnight is PLENTY late enough for any form of ‘musical/noisey entertainment’.
IF there is an exceptional time (such as the recent Jubilee), then there is a reason to grant such.
However, with the greates respect to the users of Parkdeans’ facilities, I have a dreadful feeling that most of them won’t care too much about causing any ‘celebratory’ noise!
Sorry Planning, but this should be refused!
My wife and I have been visitors to this resort every year for many years (we live on the island and use this fantastic place as a retreat and we are in our mid 70’s}.
We are not party people and have rented mobile homes from very close to the entertainment complex and even on the other side of he site and several places in-between and we have never head any noise disturbance or in deed ‘racket’ from this entertainment venue.
I stay up late, never in bed before midnight but my wife often goes to bed around 11pm – neither of us has been kept awake by revellers.
My own dear Mother where she lived would often say ” It’s so quite around here” but sadly her hearing was less acute as she aged too, so we never mentioned it wasn’t.
Perhaps you are more fortunate but for many who love to sleep in hot Summers with the windows open, noise is a huge problem, and it only takes one group of loud low lives to ruin life for people nearby, and such people are growing not declining in number.
Best to keep the drunken and drugged late night revellers to more fitting and already tarnished towns on the Isle.
So lets hope it is banned.
I don’t blame people for objecting to these extended drinking and entertainment requests.
When is enough, enough? 24 hours of shouting, screaming and noise?
Apart from noise disturbance to residents, what about other holidaying guests who don’t want to be kept awake until 01:30?
Why do people have to push boundaries all the time. Greed, that’s why.
I must be missing something why on earth would you want to go on holiday staying in a caravan
park. It must be horrendous.
Yes, you are missing the fact that you are obviously a snob. Horses for courses…
No just experience of the places.
Nimby neighbours? They must have massive back yards! Some Luddites never stop trying to throw a spanner in the works!
Thorness Bay? I didn’t think there’s anything that close by, is there? A couple of farms, but they’re quite some distance away. I must admit I don’t like excess noise late at night, but I think even I would be hard pushed to complain about a holiday site so far away from any town or village.
As far as I’m aware the Island still is a holiday destination and holidaymakers generally do like entertainment and if that means it goes on a bit late at the weekends then I think that’s just something you have to put up with if you live in a holiday destination.
There’s plenty of other sites where it might be a problem, but Thorness Bay? No.
