UPDATED: Neighbours in a quiet residential road on the outskirts of Newport have lifted a car onto its side to free a young boy after he was run over by the vehicle this evening (Tuesday).
Emergency services, including the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, responded to Alvington Manor View in Gunville shortly before 17:00 after a red Ford Ka collided with a young boy.
Hearing screams, neighbours rushed outside to discover the child trapped underneath the car before lifting it off the youngster and onto its side.
Paramedics have raced the child to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport where he is currently being assessed. Police are awaiting news from doctors before reopening the cul-de-sac.
Part of the road remains closed.
UPDATE @ 18:30 – Police have reopened Alvington Manor View following news from St Mary’s Hospital, indicating a positive outlook for the young child.
Island Echo understands the boy, aged 4-years-old, has suffered a severe broken leg but is not in a life-threatening condition.
UPDATE @ 19:25 – 6 locals have been praised for their quick thinking at what has been described as a ‘horrific sight’.
Residents of Alvington Manor View are coming to terms with what has happened and have said it is something they ‘will never forget’.
The car has been removed from its resting position by the owner.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: Keith Drummond, one of the 6 men to lift the car off the boy, has said residents have now got in touch with their local councillor, John Hobart, to look at speed calming measures that could be implemented on the road.
Keith said:
“It was a horrible sight but the massive positive is the little lad is ok and in the right place for his recovery”.
