A key route through Newport is to be turned into a temporary one-way system for up to 3 weeks, adding to the disruption already being felt across the Isle of Wight.
St George’s Way will be affected as part of highway works linked to the construction of the new St George’s retail park, where a rising main sewer is being installed to serve the development – which will include McDonalds, Costa and Aldi.
The temporary traffic management will come into force from around 20:00 on Sunday 26th April, ahead of works beginning on the Monday. The scheme is expected to last for around 3 weeks, with completion scheduled for Friday 15th May.
During this time, St George’s Way will operate as a one-way route north to south, between St George’s Approach and Shide Road.
Changes will also affect surrounding roads, with Medina Avenue running one-way south to north, and St George’s Approach restricted to one-way traffic heading towards St George’s Way.
A temporary parking restriction will also be introduced on the western side of Medina Avenue to help traffic flow, although the exact extent is still being finalised.
The works are being carried out by Crownpark, who say multiple work gangs will operate simultaneously, and weekend working may be used in a bid to complete the scheme as quickly as possible.
A spokesperson for the developers has said:
“We know there is never a good time for roadworks and the disruption they can cause and we apologise to local residents for this.
“We have worked with the local highways authority to programme these works to co-ordinate with other works in the area.
“The new rising main sewer that is being installed is a critical part to the new retail park and will enable us to open the doors later this year!”
The works form part of wider infrastructure improvements linked to the new St George’s retail park, where construction of a supermarket and associated units is already underway.

It comes at the same time as the planned closure of Fairlee Road on the opposite side of Newport. More information on this forthcoming closure can be found at: www.islandecho.co.uk/major-newport-road-to-close-next-week-extra-works-planned-to-cut-disruption/.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through Newport during the works period.

‘Weekend working may be used’ – ooh, steady on boys!
The numpties shirk in their vehicles all week so should have
the energy to get out of the vehicle by Saturday
Double pay might make them kick into action. I doubt it though
more action in the local cemetery!
I wish some Numpty would finally fix the traffic lights at Lake
MAKES ONE WONDER DID THEY EVER CATCH THE NUMPTY VAN
DRIVER WHO DAMAGED THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS?
I bet in the end a mainland company will repair the traffic lights
because the local numpties don’t know how too!
Bellend
All this for just another burger joint, a cheap food shop and a coffee outlet. Never worth it, they all exist nearby, all that will happen is it will spread that same amount of customers out over more shops, everyone of them will reduce their prices to entice customers to their establishments, probably using cheaper lower grade produce to make it possible, convincing their employees that low wages are necessary to keep them employed……….. and I could go on…. And I will again soon….:-)
More persons will be going down the benefit route
eating all this junk food
And…… I didn’t even touch on the effect it will have on the shops in the nearby town.
Have you been into Newport lately!!!
Next to no parking, and where you can it cost a kings ransom. And no shops.
If you need to point yours fingers at anyone, then it’s the council for their obscene parking and retail rates.
Personally I shop where it suits my wallet. And just because the new shops are there doesn’t mean you have to go there. But we all will at least one point.
Temu, Amazon and Ebay are much better value
and better still NO parking charges.
and eventually no highstreet shops !.
With Fairlee Road closed in both directions from 20th April until 1st May Newport will suffer
How long before the council implement a
congestion charge going into Newport!
