A major road in and out of Newport will shut from next week for 11 days – but Island Roads will be carrying out additional works during the closure in a bid to reduce overall disruption.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Fairlee Road will be closed as a through route from Monday (20th April) through to Friday 1st May, to allow new water and sewerage connections to be installed.
A full closure is required due to the scale of the works, which involve excavating trenches of up to 6 metres in depth.
Island Roads says it has been working with local stakeholders to align other planned activities in the area during the closure period, when traffic will be diverted via Staplers.
This coordinated programme will include tree works by the Isle of Wight Council at Seaclose Park, near Medina College.
Discussions are also ongoing with Crownpark, the company behind the new Newport Football Club development at the Racecourse, to determine whether access and related works can also take place during the closure.
Island Roads will also carry out any necessary highway maintenance that can be completed while the road is shut.
All associated works will be managed using temporary traffic lights, where required.
A spokesperson has said:
“Although the main works on Fairlee Road are not being carried out by Island Roads, we have taken the opportunity to co ordinate other activities to coincide with the closure, when traffic levels are lighter.
“There is never a good time to undertake work on Fairlee Road, and some disruption is unfortunately unavoidable. However, by scheduling the works between the Easter holidays and the main summer season, and by aligning them with other planned activity in the area, we are seeking to minimise disruption as much as possible.
“We would like to thank the Isle of Wight Council and Crownpark for their co operation in helping to co ordinate these works.”

All these roadworks are becoming way beyond a joke now. There has been far too many closures, lasting far too long on far too many roads of late
There just never seems to be an end to them as almost every road you encounter has a road closed sign on it these days.
Island motorists have had enough!!
I CANNOT believe the Numpties have STILL NOT repaired
the traffic lights at Lake
NEARLY 3 MONTHS NOW – ISLAND ROADS ARE USELESS B’STARDS
I am starting to wonder if the Island is run by Mickey Mouse or
Donald Fcuking Duck
The island is a joke
Well said. Visitors also to our lovely Island have had enough. What with the exorbitant
Ferry crossing. You might has well sit on the M6!
Visitors to the island would be better off going to
Dorset – NO extortionate ferry fares to pay.
A mains Sewer… That will come in handy for when the housing application goes in. And luckily there’s a new junction right next to it that they used an application from 1984 for. Doesn’t stink at all does it
Funny how works can be coordinated for this particular situation in Newport but it’s sod the rest of the island!
I have been using the road from Morrisons in Lake to Newport (Chivy Shute) and there hasn’t not been a workforce on site all day.
I would suggest that in less you have workers on site at every available opportunity it will obviously take longer to complete.
Or has the work been poorly planned?
and Crown Park have just done a letter drop saying they are turning St Georges Way and Medina Avenue one way during the same time period! So anyone coming from Sandown to Newport will hit the traffic through Arreton trying to avoid Staplers and then all converge on Medina Avenue in Shide!
Came here first the time with the family, had a great time seeing the island , but the road closures are on a different level ! I feel sorry for you guys
