Major highway improvement work is set to begin on Tennyson Road in Freshwater this month, with the road closed as a through route while the scheme is carried out.
Island Roads will begin work on Monday (12th October), with the project scheduled to finish on 23rd October.
The scheme will tackle underlying ground conditions which have caused the road surface to deteriorate over the years.
Because the work requires deeper-than-usual excavations, Tennyson Road will remain closed as a through route throughout the project.
However, Island Roads intends to reopen the road at weekends, from Friday evening until Monday morning, where it is safe to do so.
Vehicular access to properties will be maintained where possible throughout the works, while access to Freshwater Fire Station will be maintained at all times.
Island Roads has also visited businesses with rear access from Tennyson Road and says it will work with them to minimise disruption.
The Isle of Wight Council has agreed to suspend enforcement in Avenue Road car park for the duration of the scheme.
A temporary traffic plan will also be put in place to keep the diversion route as short as possible.
This will include making the section of High Street between Avenue Road and Silcombe Lane one-way.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“The community knows that this work is very much needed and by strengthening the road’s foundations, we hope to both bring about immediate improvement while also reducing the need for further improvement work in the future.
“But this sort of work unfortunately cannot be carried out without some level of disruption and we would like to thank businesses and residents in advance for their understanding.”
