A key arterial road in and out of Newport is to close for 11 days later this month, with major disruption and lengthy tailbacks expected.
It has been confirmed that Fairlee Road will close to all traffic from 08:00 on Monday 20th April until 17:00 on Friday 1st May.
The full closure, which will be in force 24 hours a day, is expected to significantly impact traffic between Newport, East Cowes, Wootton and Ryde, with motorists forced onto alternative routes such as Staplers Road.
The closure is to enable works to install a new sewer and water connection by D.A.R.E.S.
Drivers should plan ahead to allow extra time for their journeys during the closure period.
Southern Vectis has confirmed that Routes 5, 9, 49, 59, N5 and N9 will all divert. Bus stops between Hillside and Binfield Corner will not be served while the road is closed.

So many Road closures lately, perfect time to install
speed cameras whilst the works are being carried out.
Speed cameras are a waste of time and money on the Island. The biggest problem on the roads here is drink and drug driving. We need old style Policing where they pull in suspected motorists and check them for drink/drugs at the roadside. Hiding behind cameras benefits nobody, proactive Policing is what is needed!!
Did you read the article? The part where major queues?
So Why don`t Island Roads take the opportunity to resurface the top section of Fairlee Road at the same time ..or are they planning yet more missery for everyone …
Yep
I don’t suppose they will take the opportunity to get it resurfaced while they are it.
while Fairlee rd is closed will there access to The Orchards care home
Where is the road closed from? What about medina college access
Good point Steve. And also the other post about Orchard Care Home. Surely there must be some plan in place as also, what about the houses along that stretch of road? The article says closed from Hillside to Binfield Corner.
Can Island Echo post a plan of the closure so we can see exactly how this will restrict our travel plans please ?.
Another instance of the entire road being closed when its not necessary. Atleast the diversion isn’t as bad as others however the real reason is they want both lanes closed so they can park their vans and trucks although its amazing that any highway maintenance across the world parks in different locations to keep a one lane traffic light system open. Currently the traffic will be horrendous on staplers so a one lane road will help a little.
Hi Richard, I think this is all to do with the continual blowing up of the chamber covers almost outside the care home. The drainage down the dip from there has been diabolical for years so I guess the problem has now backed up to the point where something has to be done?
Mind you, I don’t ever recall seeing any of those drains being cleared so perhaps full of all sorts of rubbish.
It must pass across the park land and eventually empty into the river. It needs sorting properly so perhaps on this occasion disruption can be justified.
Same out on milly why?? only doing the bloody pavement..
Worse things happen at sea, i am sure we will all survive. Always the same people complaining nothing else to do in there lives
At least the floating bridge should make some money – or could this be the time for it to have a breakdown!!!!
What at £2.50 each way !!!
