The team over at Monkey Haven in Newport has announced that one of their Barbary Macaques, Nanushka has passed away.
A rescue animal saved from the illegal pet trade, Nanushka was transferred to the sanctuary back in 2014.
Given her ordeal in that earlier part of her life that saw her brought at a market and dumped in a pet shop, Nanushka developed some unnatural compulsive habits that lead to her suffering a minor injury.
Keepers tried to help her nurse the wound but she was unable to let it heal naturally, instead over-grooming and tending to it continuously.
After all options were explored along with help from partners Stichting AAP, keepers were forced to make the tough decision to say goodbye to a very popular and much loved animal.
Nanushka was surrounded by her animal carers and the team at The Carisbrooke Vets as everyone said a sad goodbye.
