Island Echo is taking a look at the Isle of Wight teams participating in each sport at this year’s Island Games in Orkney, which get underway on Saturday 12th July
The Isle of Wight is taking a team of 16 athletes to the Island Games in Orkney this month – competing in a total of 12 events.
Our Island Athletics team will be hoping to improve on their 7th place in the medals table in Guernsey in 2019, when we came behind Guernsey, Saaremaa, Isle of Man, Jersey, Ynys Mon and the Faroe Islands.
The last time we competed – at the Guernsey Island Games in 2023 – our athletes picked up a total of 6 medals: 3 gold, 3 silver. Our gold medallists were: Nick Percy (discus), Andy Frost (hammer) and Charlie Metcalfe, Holly Newton and Carly Scoble (team half-marathon). Daniel Eckersley (3000m steeplechase), Amy Kellard (10000m) and Charlie Melcalfe (individual half-marathon) all came home with silver medals.
Of the Guernsey medallists, only Carly Scoble, Daniel Eckersley and Amy Kellard will be returning at this year’s Island Games.
