As sailors and spectators alike mill around in the twilight hours between races and the evenings celebrations, Medina Bookshop will be hosting a series of evening events, a chance to browse the shelves with a free glass of wine, chat and meet a fascinating selection of local practitioners of the arts.
The first event will be on Monday 31st July between 18:00 and 20:00 when there will be a unique opportunity to meet a selection of local authors in a relaxed and informal setting.
Feted as the new Patrick O’Brian, Katie Daysh will be on hand to chat about her much lauded debut novel ‘Leeward’, as will children’s author Peter J.Murray with his new book of Island based horror stories ‘The Darker Side Of Wight’.
For even younger readers Jules Marriner will be there with her wonderful self illustrated titles. Crime writer Mary Grand’s Island based books have been enjoyed by many over the years and she’ll be there with her latest book ‘Death at Castle Cove’. Malcolm Turner, the author of the shop’s best-selling title on Uffa Fox, will also be present.
This is a great opportunity for anyone keen to find out a bit more about the writing process or getting published, or just to pick up a signed copy.
The second event will be on Wednesday 2nd August between 18:00 and 20:00 when Des Pawson – 1 of the world’s leading authorities on knots and sailors’ ropework – will be at the shop.
A researcher and historian on the subject, he is the author of many books and papers. Having recently moved to Cowes, this will be a great opportunity to meet and have a chat with this inspiring craftsman. He’ll have some rope on hand to give a few demonstrations too and we’ll have a selection of his books and publications on sale, so you can pick up a signed copy by this iconic master of his trade.
Lastly, on Thursday 3rd August between 18:00 and 20:00, there will be the opportunity to meet Ukranian illustrator Yana Barabash who found herself on the Island at the end of last year and now lives in Ventnor with her mother and daughter.
She has been quick to take inspiration from the local surroundings, producing some wonderful paintings of Island locations. Working masterfully in oils Yana has also produced some spectacular illustrations of traditional Ukranian fairy tales and some of her work is currently on display in the shop. She’ll be on hand to talk about her work and inspirations.
All of the events are free and the door is open with a friendly welcome for anyone interested in meeting what is a thoroughly inspiring collection of creatives.
