Hailing from Brooklyn in New York, the young scruffy afro-haired singer/songwriter Cannonball Statman will make his exciting Isle of Wight debut at Medina Bookshop in Cowes next Wednesday (25th October).
He has been compared to Bob Dylan (his appearance), Jonathan Richman, (his delivery) and Captain Beefheart (his surreal, off-kilter songs).
Coming from the same open mic scene that spawned the likes of Regina Spektor and The Mouldy Peaches he is regarded by many as the king of modern antifolk and has worked with the likes of the legendary Jeffrey Lewis who recommended him to the bookshop.
The cosy confines of the bookshop that seats just 30 people will play host to a solo acoustic set featuring songs with great titles such as ‘Carlos Is On Fire (And Alicia Doesn’t Know)’, ‘Newlywed Rock Bands Rescuing Mattresses Off The Shipwrecks’ and ‘Ode To An Apple Flavored Bus Stop Bench’.
Paul Armfield, manager of Medina Bookshop says:
“I was trying to book Jeffrey Lewis who has an enormous cult following – he wasn’t able to come but instead recommended Mr Statman (real name Jesse).
“I looked him up and read 1 review that said ‘his songs are intense, oblique, and teetering on the edge of madness. The stand-out track is 5 minutes of complex word play which feels like something Paul Auster would have written in the New York Trilogy. 1Â of the best, and most unique, sets of music I have heard all year.’
“Then I listened to some of the songs and was charmed, amused and hugely impressed. I’m really excited to be bringing a bit of Brooklyn excitement to Cowes.’
Doors open at 19:00 for a 19:30 start on Wednesday 25th October at Medina Bookshop in Cowes.
Tickets for the event are ÂŁ10 (ÂŁ6 to students but they must phone to book) and available from the bookshop website or by calling the shop on 01983 300044.
The venue is not licensed and attendees are asked to bring their own refreshments.
