Lynnbottom Household Waste and Recycling Centre could re-open in the coming weeks as the Government asks local authorities to open the gates to tips up and down the country.
Robert Jenrick, Secretary for Housing, Communities and Local Government, yesterday (Tuesday) confirmed that local authorities are being asked to plan the organised re-opening of sites such as Lynnbottom in the coming weeks.
Amended guidance for Councils is due to be issued shortly which will outline the expectations, with social distancing a key factor.
Islanders have been taking to social media over the past few weeks to express their disappointment at the closure of the tip. The closure has been blamed for an apparent rise in the number of bonfires being held across the Island, which not only has a negative impact on health but adds to the fire risk.
Once the gates do re-open strict rules are expected to be enforced, such as limiting the number of people on site at any one time.
Natasha Dix of the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“The council has been working over the past few weeks to develop a strategy for a managed re-opening of the HWRCs at the appropriate time.
“Re-opening will require safe and controlled measures to manage social distancing, which will need to consider the volume of vehicles that may come to the site at any one time.
“We anticipate when the government updates guidance on the opening of sites, the council and Amey will move to implement a managed re-opening to ensure the safety of both visitors to the site and our staff.
“We appreciate the patience and resilience of our residents and have seen a fantastic effort with recycling at the kerbside.
“We cannot thank Islanders enough for the support they have given to our recycling and waste collection crews.”

Gd idea.. Best way maybe to have regional days to be allowed to the tip with proof of address. Driving licence would be a gd way as it has photo and address.
Good idea they could use every 3/4 parking bays and use a 1 in 1 out system
The queue will probably stretch to Bembridge or Freshwater!
yep. How about allocating a particular day to a group of postcodes ONLY! Your driving licence shows your postcode…. Tough sh** if you didn’t change your postcode with DVLA…. That will stop the MASSIVE queues on the first day it opens…
Why not take skip’s round to the community?
That’s a great idea, many councils on the mainland do this where residents do not live directly near a civil amenity facility. It would also stop people making long, non-essential trips in these unprecedented times. When I phoned the council last week to ask why it was closed and why they could not employ social distancing, nothing I said was taken on board. I asked what i should do, and she said use yellow pages, and phone a private contractor. I said I am already paying 4% extra on my Council tax, and if any other company did not offer the services promised, I would be entitled to a refund.
You might as well P*** in the wind.
A few year ago if 5 people in a street asked for a community Skip the council where i used to live on the mainland supplied one free of charge. I live in Ryde in a private house there are at least six gardens looking from my back window that could fill at least one skip each, It’s disgusting.
Good idea
What ever they do it will be mayhem
Why not click and dump
Hope this includes Afton as well.
Be pleased if tip opens as have disintegrating garden waste. Think some system will have to be done otherwise cars will be tempted to queue on road which is dangerous
Good news if it happens and hopefully it will reduce the load on council and emergency services from fly tipping and bonfires.
Pity the council are having to be forced into doing it by the government though.
Since when has any Council employed common sense?
