Islanders who live alone, including single parents with children under the age of 18, will be able to create a ‘support bubble’ with another household from this weekend.
The news marks a major step forward in rolling back the lockdown restrictions across the country and means that those who have been socially isolated for months on end will now finally be able to interact with one other household.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that ‘bubbles’ will be permitted from this Saturday.
Those who live alone (or alone with children under 18) will be able to:
- Visit the home of their chosen household (and they can visit you)
- Stay overnight at the home of their chosen household
- Do not have to stay 2m apart from members of their chosen household
- Can move into their chosen household, but not do have to
Loved up couples who have been living alone will finally be able to meet up – as well as engaging in bedroom activity!
The new guidelines may also help single parents with child care.
Unfortunately, those who are shielding are not permitted to form a support bubble.

Excellent news a move in the right direction
Yet another government blunder one other household catch 22 mum dad brother sister grandpa grandma lover who do you choose choose wisely grasshopper and risk offending the rest a very ill advised act by the gov
Woooohooooo! Sexytime I’m coming for you…
you win island echo today 🙂
I think most people have been meeting partners anyway , I know I will be shot down in flames but I dont think it’s very fair
I am on my own all day as my husband works long hours , I would love to have a bubble u could associate with.I think it’s pretty sad that grandparents still cant see grandchildren if they ste lucky enough to still have their spouse .Can an elderly person not be infected by the child of a single parent ? What utter nonsense! As for ‘bubbles’ in the recent good weather there were huge groups of people who were meeting together ,maybe 25- 20, because obviously they all live in the same household. And I am the mug that has stuck to the rules .
Andy, I am sorry you find my comments bigoted. I can only go on experience for my views as you do. I have known, and know many people ‘claiming’ to be ‘single parents’ who are anything but, and use this ‘title’ to claim subsidised rent, council tax, and then get away with working the minimum hours, 16, to then claim what was child tax, and working tax credits to the max.
This then gives them £20 plus for the first child, over £16 each for every additional child, over £140 pw for a child from tax credits and an additional £60 for each child after the first, and only have to pay a few pounds rent and C tax, IF any at all.
With a wage as well this is often a better total income than most workers on the Island doing full time work if they have to pay full c tax and rent.
Hence those I know ‘do so’.
You may know more decent people than I, but I said ‘many’ not all are on the swindle.
Often these people are only too quick to tell you how little they earn, yet never tell you how much extra they receive and how little they have to pay out on living costs of housing and c.tax.
Not bigoted, just I know peoples real way of living in these modern times and such is all too common for many.
And as i said the many who ‘do’ have a live in partner then have their wage, or income support and perhaps a little ‘selling gear’ to raise their total income still much further.
Most social housing estates will have many living like this, and some who are ‘straight’ imo.
IF the cap fits wear it, IF it doesn’t then find someone only a few doors down who it almost certainly will.
This is so true. The only ppl i know who can afford takeaways every night. When its a treat for ppl who work.
Sad, I am glad you can see that I am not being horrible, just honest.
But we have two types who don’t wish to hear such.
The bleeding heart liberals, who see any ‘single parent’ as this lonely, hard working, hard done by person. Never as a social, outgoing person, not working who may have had casual doo de doo’s and not bothered to use contraception, knowing full well that that is the way to gain a home and income now.
And those who ARE ‘that sort’ who don’t wish their ‘victim status’ to be questioned, so are happy to diss any truthful posts on the subject.
Of course there are genuine victims of single parents, yet I am not referring to them and so IF the cap fits, wear it. Or, better still wear a ‘cap’ both ends next time, then you wouldn’t be a victim and we wouldn’t have to fund someone else’s night of passion for 18 years plus.
But that would mean working, paying tax, instead of having full freedom to please oneself each and every day, get sympathy from the dim or naive for your ‘plight’, and getting given an income, and a free home, so don’t ‘expect’ anything to change. They have never had it so good and they know it.
Such negative coments
Thanks for your insightful views Martin. It sounds like you are a wealth of useless knowledge…
Society is breaking down and that started when kids breeding like rabbits became ‘acceptable’.
Bigoted? Just saying it as it is.
So I’m a key worker and my missus is pregnant with my child. I’m a tad confused, are we allowed to be at ones house? I’m a supermarket delivery driver. I deliver to lots of people each day so I could bring something in via my uniform (ofc, I keep my distance with deliveries). That wasn’t mentioned or have I not read it properly haha
Does this apply to the under 18s as well? If an under 18 was living in a household with a single parent can they leave the house or is it only the adult
Yes. Boris said all member of the household
All people in the family as long as there is one single parent so yes
My opinion seems to have been banned, yet again!
Seems a lot of people have been doing this already. Shows the government are out of touch.
I don’t think this government have been in touch with how to beat this virus since January.
The worst aspect is that they keep changing their minds and flout their own rules but expect us to abide by them.
Its not over yet unfortunately.
