Thousands of people will come together to Walk the Wight with Mountbatten on Sunday (13th May 2018) and organisers are urging all Islanders to get involved – whether walking on the day or by supporting those who are.
The iconic event, the largest fundraiser on the Island, helps ensure Islanders and their families get the very best care when facing death, dying and bereavement.
Every year, Mountbatten must raise over £7million to provide its services for free to those they currently support. But there are still thousands of Islanders living with life threatening illnesses who only get access to Mountbatten’s services right at the end of their lives. By taking part in Walk the Wight, you can help ensure more people are supported sooner and at the time that they need Mountbatten most.
There is still time for people to Walk the Wight with Mountbatten by:
• Sign up online at www.mountbatten.org.uk for a £15 Walker Number only ticket (collect Walker Number at start lines)
• Sign up in Mountbatten Newport, Lugley Street, for a Walker Pack (not available after 16:00 on Friday 11th May 2018)
• Sign up on the day (limited availability) at any start point for a suggested donation of £20 per adult, £10 per child or for groups of 3 or more £10 per adult and £5 per child
Jax Jones, Walk the Wight organiser and Major Events Fundraiser, said:
“This is a very special and emotional day, full of smiles, tears and memories of loved ones who’ve died. The atmosphere on the day is incredible; thousands of Islanders walking together with a common purpose – it’s truly awe-inspiring. If you haven’t walked the Wight before, be part of it this year and create a memory you will cherish forever!”
Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten Chief Executive, said:
“Unfortunately, there is sometimes the perception that as a much-loved and well-supported charity that we already have enough support from our community. The danger of this is that people might think we don’t need their fundraising efforts – but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
“We try hard to provide care for as many people we can with the money we have. The truth is that the demand for our services is growing fast and to be able to raise the £7m+ that we need each and every year, we ask that our community continues to rally behind us and Walk the Wight is a great way to do this.
“I am looking forward to once again walking the full 26.5 miles and meeting many of you along the route. Everyone at Mountbatten wishes all of our walkers the very best of luck, and I’d personally like to thank you for helping to ensure we can continue to support the growing number of Islanders who are facing death, dying and bereavement.”
