Abandoned cars with ‘slashed tyres’, ‘smashed windows’ and infested with rats cause ‘absolute misery’ to residents, an Isle of Wight councillor has complained.
The scourge is not being tackled and has ‘got to stop’, Liberal Democrat Michael Lilley told Ryde Town Council (RTC) earlier this wek (Wednesday).
He said the owners of the cars should be made to ‘take responsibility’ and he urged RTC to acknowledge the issue.
The Ryde Appley and Elmfield representative said he gets ‘fed up’ with it being ‘ignored’ and ‘bounced back’. He said:
“There are two cars in Rink Road which are opposite Simeon Rec, that have been there for a long time,”
“They have slashed tyres, they have smashed windows and everything.
“Because the owners are still acknowledging them, Island Roads are not able to remove them. They’re not fit for purpose but the DVLA would have to come over here and they only come over twice a year.
“There are rats in them.”

He said young people have been seen getting in the cars.
The councillor said this area was just one example and mentioned ‘eight or ten’ abandoned cars over the last two years.
Cllr Ian Stephens said there had been ‘vans, campervans and trailers’ left but that the issue was for the Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils (IWALC) to take forward.
He said:
“As a former member of the Isle of Wight Council, in all my years, I tackled this at Isle of Wight Council level.
“I think if we’re going to do anything, because it’s an Island-wide situation…we should move it through IWALC.
“Our staff are maxed out with dealing with things they have to deal with. And we’ve got other things we want to deal with: green spaces, youth movement and getting things in place for that.”
Binstead and Fishbourne Isle of Wight councillor Ian Dore said he agreed with Cllr Stephens and that over the next few months there will be some discussions with Highways PFI.
“The more that pitch in on this, the better,”
Cllr Diana Conyers said she was not sure how much influence IWALC would have and that it was something for County Hall to deal with.

There’s been a dumped Nissan Qashqai in Fishbourne for
months.
Where is traffic law on the island!
As I understand it, if a vehicle is parked on the public highway minus MOT, insurance or tax then the police can haul them to a car pound. If the vehicle is not claimed within a specified period , said vehicle gets crushed and recycled. Whats the problem?
I doubt the island have a compound, I don’t believe they
even own a tow truck.
The sh*t that goes on on the island would never happen on the
mainland.
THERE ARE RULES ON THE MAINLAND
Problem is, there is too much B/S involved about towing them away, just like the B/S that occurred towing away the caravan that stayed there for weeks.
You report it to plod, they don’t want to know, report it to the council, nor do they, report it to Island roads, nor do they, because they all tell you same crap about can’t move it without owner’s permission, well nick the owner for fly tipping then
Did they ever catch the Numpty who smashed into
the traffic lights at Lake bringing the island to a standstill
for 3 months.
That’s the problem when Clueless Numpties are
running the island.
I wouldn’t vote for any of them.
However much I agree with this article, this is more of a revenue raiser and needs more focus than what’s currently presented. What about the excessive noise of the dangerous car racers that are plaguing our seafront. Screaching their tyres round corners, exceeding the speed limit to do so. Someone is going to get knocked down, the lamp post and palm tree have already come a cropper!!
My thoughts exactly, but the numpties running
the island couldn’t sto a bus at a bus stop yet alone
stop a speeding motorist.
The standard of leadership on the island is back of the
classroom material.
We need real leadership, people who know how to
enforce rules, not who let people break rules.
