Ventnor Rugby Club has handed over a cheque to The Wave Project after volunteers raised money by providing food and refreshments to cyclists taking part in the recent round-the-Isle of Wight Randonnée.
The presentation took place at Watcombe on Saturday as Ventnor’s 1st XV began their Hampshire Counties Two campaign with a 17-7 victory over Romsey.
Indra Riches, wife of club president Warren Riches, presented the £200 cheque to Sarah Dunsterville of The Wave Project during a brief ceremony at the club.
The amount donated has not been provided.
The money was raised by a group of volunteers led by Ventnor Rugby Club clubhouse manager Roly Toombs, who provided refreshments for those taking part in the Randonnée earlier this month.
Roly said:
“This is something we do every year and this time round we were particularly taken by the work of The Wave Project, whose unique method of helping disadvantaged Island children through their award-winning surf-therapy courses is now providing help for over 60 youngsters annually.”
The Wave Project uses surfing as a form of therapy and supports young people on the Isle of Wight through its courses.
The charity donation added another positive note to the day at Watcombe, where Ventnor’s 1st XV secured an opening-day league victory over Romsey.
Ventnor led 10-7 at half-time before eventually running out 17-7 winners, with the match having been interrupted for more than an hour following an injury to a Romsey player.
