Ryde Town Council has clarified its position over the future of Vectis Hall, insisting its ambition to restore the historic building for community use has never changed despite the decision to sell the site.
The Council purchased Vectis Hall in 2020 with the aim of securing the building’s long-term future; however, it has been said that changing financial circumstances and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have made the original plans increasingly difficult to deliver.
According to the authority, alterations to grant funding programmes and shifting priorities have significantly reduced the opportunities available to support a project of Vectis Hall’s scale.
The Council also says changes in its membership since 2020 have brought different views on spending priorities, with councillors now focusing resources on areas where they believe they can make the greatest difference to Ryde residents.
A decision to dispose of the building was approved by Full Council earlier this year on 12th May 2026, with Vectis Hall set to be sold by public auction.
However, the sale process was temporarily delayed while the Council dealt with what it described as urgent legal matters, which ultimately saw the Town Clerk postpone the auction process to protect the Council’s position.
At a Full Council meeting earlier this week, councillors approved the Town Clerk’s decision to delay the sale, with 1 member abstaining.
Ryde Town Council says it hopes the eventual sale will attract buyers who share its aspirations for the historic building.
The authority is encouraging interested parties to contact Clive Emson Auctioneers, who are marketing the property.
