At least 10 more kayakers or canoeists are needed to act as safety craft to enable the 64th Pier to Pier Swim Race between Sandown and Shanklin to take place next month.
The event, which is due to take place on Saturday 6th August, sees up to 100 swimmers race from the beach alongside Sandown Pier and across the bay to the site of what was Shanklin Pier.
There are currently 74 entries for the event.
Bob Cooper, Safety Officer and Referee says:
“Stringent insurance criteria as well as ensuring the total safety of the competitors means we have to have a proportionate number of safety craft to the numbers of swimmers”.
The main safety craft will be the Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat, Ryde Inshore Rescue and at least 6 boats from the Shanklin Deep Sea Fishermen.
Any kayakers/canoeists interested in helping should contact Adrian Brown by emailing [email protected] (IOW Kayak Club) or Bob Cooper on [email protected].
